Intel i7-4960X Ivy Bridge-E Review Comment Thread

Hmmm, I remember when X79 came out, it was THE platform to have. 40 PCI lanes made all the difference at the time if you were planning on running multi-GPU setups. These days, it truly is overshadowed by Z87 and to a lesser extent Z77. PCI lanes aside, these two platforms (especially Z87) have waaay more functionality than X79. In reality, most people, even enthusiasts, won't be running more than dual GPU setups, and with the excellent onboard audio solutions on ROG platforms, the extra PCI lanes are quickly becoming redundant in favour of more storage options (SSD RAID arrays, people).

Kudos to Intel for revising their heatsink design, at least on this premium product. I bet people would have been MAAAADD if their $1000 IB-E chip had the same crappy thermals as IB and Haswell.

I'll agree with most on this one. Sure it's fast, but not fast enough to make most enthusiasts fork over the premium price. Good review though!

Wow, that a thorough review SKYMTL!
Tought I cannot buy a chip like that in any forseeable future, it was really interesting to read how the flagship Intel CPU perform. Funny that it does not always win and quite cheap from intel to use the X79 chipset still, but never the less - it is a interesting CPU.
Not much applications benefit from the number of cores and threads, however it looks like that it is pretty fast when they do. But Intel should have slowed the Haswell i7-4770K a bit down to make the i7-4960X more appealing :haha:

Anyway, not to me ungratefull brat for such a interesting review, I spoted two small typos, that might be worth fixing (tough in such huge review there must be errors here and there...):

1) http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...024-intel-i7-4960x-ivy-bridge-e-review-6.html
"It effectively removes the CPU from the equation, generating a CPU-centric score."
I belive that the first "CPU" should be "GPU" to this test makes sense... but most users surely understand that.

2) http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...024-intel-i7-4960x-ivy-bridge-e-review-3.html
The table with the testing HW config says that OS is "Windows Ultimate x64 SP1 (w/all updates)", yet fail to mention witch Windows this actually is. Upon reading more is clear that they are Windows 7, but the number is missing, so it is open to interpretations a little

PS. The Asus X79 mobo looks like a spaceship :shok:

Definitively a design beauty :thumb:

I'm upgrading my 3930K to the 4930K as soon as it's available. I know it's not a huge upgrade but I'm doing it anyhow. As far as I'm concerned,[as well as many botique builders] x79 is THE way to go for gaming. And gaming is all I really do with my PC. Killswitch and I are doing another build with the Air 540 case and will post pics etc. when it's all done. We're going to use the Swiftech H220 as well. The H220 is now available at NCIX.

No problem Soullessone. Any fault is directly that of my good friend Killswitch. He's the guy that got me into all this in the first place. I'm glad he did. I don't spend money on myself by hitting bars, pool rooms, casinos etc.,so spending on my hobby is justified. I'm super lucky my wife doesn't have a problem with my expensive hobby either. She too is an avid gamer with a pretty decent rig. When I upgrade, she gets my other upgrades. Know what I mean? Thanks buddy.

I was just screwing with you Silk We all have hobbies thats why we are here, Waiting for Lowfat to Gloat about all his kick ass builds but the humble bastard just wont do it :P

Great build though and KS is a great guy so happy he is helping you out.

Waiting on some new X79 boards :)

After reading some reviews on OC'ability of the 4930k swapping with my 3930k MAY prove to be a dissapointment as I'm presently at 4.7 Ghz and most importantly at only 1.34v....can't give up this Chip ;)

Will be waiting now for X99 Chipset next year.

Although my upgrade path is still looking at
Corsair 900D w Swiftech h320 ;)
