NCIX Auctioned Off Unwiped servers, Contains Credit Info of 258,000 Users

After the Equifax breach I put a 'hold/freeze' on my credit. I'd recommend everyone do this. It doesn't stop you from doing anything with credit, it just means they MUST contact you in order to do anything involving credit changes/issuance.

To be honest, this 'service' should be mandatory. There is no draw back other then a delay because they have to contact you to do any changes. They can't even change your contact information without contacting you.

At the risk of sounding like a shill for a commercial entity.... Credit Karma will inform you when/if a new entity comes up on your transunion radar. (Such as a new cell phone account, and/or a loan being applied for under your name).

On top of that... as a mostly cash transaction kind of person it's a bit easier for me to stay on top of it, but I have all of my cards (debit and credit) set up to email me whenever a transaction takes place.

I just went through the credit check thing recently after I had an issue getting an online Credit Check to work (ended up being a mismatch between my current address and the one they had on file). I'm still waiting for my Equifax report to show up, but the Transunion one is pretty much the same as what you'll see through Credit Karma, and/or the one that's being offered for free through your financial institution.

Credit Karma is not in QC :( I used borrowell!

I still have one outstanding CC that is not expired and that was used for a transaction with NCIX!

The RCMP physically recovering the hard-drives won't do anything if customers already copied and had prior access to the data remotely. I also highly doubt those international customers would be persecuted or brought to justice either.

no, but the asshole idiots who decided to sell the data, rather than do the right thing and either destroy it or very least contact the trustee (who would likely then tell them destroy it), will likely be prosecuted.

This is why storage should not be allowed to be re-sold by corporations. It should be required to be destroyed. Sell anything else in a fire sale... but nothing that can have financial or personal data on it.

I was involved with a government contract to replace photocopiers and printers. The contract included verifying that all possible storage media was either wiped or physically destroyed on the old units......

What a PITA trying to find and remove any and all storage (HDD, usb style storage, and memory) from the old stock over multiple manufacturers and models without any kind of service manual.........
