I know portable air conditioners are bad... I have experienced them. They are loud and not that efficient.

Is there anything new these day in advancements that has made them quiet and more efficient?

I see some reviews but I guess I have to see them in person really to know.

Typically the window units can be made more efficient than the portables. This is due to keeping hot sides hot and cold sides cold.

For portable units the most efficient ones are typically the ones with two hoses. That way they are not taking the air conditioned air out of the room and throwing it outside.

Noise however... the compressors etc are the same as they always have been and I'd be surprised to find one that is realistically any quieter.

There isn't a lot of new tech and everyone is shying away from the good design choices.

Ideally you want something with a dual hose system, insulated exhaust hose (like seriousl, WTF is up with the real cheap plastic hoses), and if the above is true a compressor that is quieter.

Many portable air conditioners aren't worth $1 because of how bad they perform, so make sure you do some research and are getting one that people are happy with the cooling performance. Typically you have to pay more to get one that does a half decent job, but $ for $, a window unit will massively outperform a portable one. They've also been changing the standard for how they display/rate the cooling power of portable units, so make sure you're familiar with the terms.

A 150 dollar window unit will destroy a 400 dollar portable all day long. You don't need to spend a ton of money on a portable if you are allowed to do a window one on your place. Not sure of your situation. We had to amend our strata laws to allow for window units. Windows units are far less noisy too.

if the above is true a compressor that is quieter.

well you pay for the silence, for cheap people don't buy an know the diffence, and yes window units are most effeicent. that single cheap plastic hose serves a purpose to exhaust heat and humidity out window. if have 2 hoses is it any better ? just need to use more BTU's to cool with floor type A/C unit
regardless its rating.

old window unit draws 15 amps

portable seen 12 amps draw save alittle on Hydro and noise

another note renters

The Residential Tenancies Act affects any agreement between a landlord and a tenant in Ontario. ... But rent can be increased if the landlord and tenant both agree to add an air conditioner or agree to extra electricity charges for an air conditioner.Jul 3, 2019

floor model opt of automatic shut off when tank is full or have flood under unit. can place unit on wood box high enough to get a pail under spout to drain unit without lugging it to drain some where else
