Racist banana throwing?

when ever I seen the squid thrown on the Ice I thought that it was referring to good goal tending like having multiple arms.

There was actually an NHL commercial (or was it heritage moments?) that explained the origins.

It was a "good luck talisman" for the Red Wings back in the day when it took 8 games to win the Stanley cup. I don't remember who started it, but I know it was two brothers and the year they started it the Wings won the cup. Hence why it's stuck around.

Labeling it 'racist' right from the get-go isn't very good journalism. Have the media and critics conveniently forgotten that banana peels have been part of slapstick humour for ages? That the person who threw it wanted Simmons to slip up, without any racial overtones whatsoever? I mean, this bad reporting contravenes all the basic rules and press obligations that I'd learned in the first week of journalism class.

It doesn't excuse the person who threw it, though. He's a douchebag, but he's probably not a bigoted douchebag.

With all due respect to all of you, why does it have to be a banana? Why not a beer bottle/cup or a hotdog? I don't know who else went to the shootout but why wait 'til Simmonds turn? Banana throwing at players of color has been happening in Europe hence this incident is considered racially motivated.

This kind of incident will always be viewed differently depending on the color of your skin. But I admire Wayne and P.K. for shrugging it off after all the attention this incident received.

Murray reacts to Simmonds incident « LA Kings Insider, read the comments for some Saturday humor.

In my mind this entire thing is only racially motivated if you yourself are racist. When I see this happen, I see a hockey player getting something thrown at them. I do NOT see a black guy getting something thrown at him. See the difference? I see a person, racist people see a black person. There is a huge difference. All of the media immediately saw this as racist and therefor are racist. If they were not then they would have seen Simmonds as just another player, not another player who happens to be black. His race should not have even entered into the question.

I don't believe people who see it as a purely racist have a racist mindset themselves. It's just that critical thought, and rationality go out the window because we've been conditioned to think that anything that happens to anyone has a racial motive behind it.

It's actually a fear of being labelled racist that has people jump to these sorts of conclusions. If Simmons had been a white guy, then everyone would say the peel was thrown to make him slip. But if any media outlet or blogger said the same thing with regards to this situation, they would be inundated with charges of bigotry and would be read the riot act by everyone from the NAACP to the CCLA.

Racism in hockey happens too often | Posted Sports | National Post

As a junior player for the Hull (now Gatineau) Olympiques in the mid-1990s, Worrell was subjected to frequent torrents of racial abuse in some arenas around the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, a teenager absorbing the most vile insults imaginable. And, like Simmonds, the target of many a tossed banana.

The best write up as of yet. Do you still see it as sensationalism?

Is it ok to ask to just close this thread?

There has been hecklers and always BE hecklers. I have had some terrible things said to me when I was a goalie (ok...some of it was deserved...but thats besides the point). Does that make those people racist?...or is it only racist when it happens to a BLACK person. The media and PC lovers ARE the real racists in this whole drama. They see it as black and white issue. Not a douchebag vs non-douchebag issue. Anyone who automatically sees it as a race issue IMHO is a closet racist and it wont be until all those wankers go the way of the KKK (marginalized and ridiculed by society as a whole) that we will never get past crap like this.

Thank you, I knew I was not the only person out there that believes this. That was the point I have been trying to make.

A good example of how we should be is from my kids. They don't see that another person is black, white, east indian, indian, chinese, etc. they just see a person. The second people bring in race into the equation, they are the racist one. They are the ones lowering themselves into thinking "oh this must be a racist act because that person is (insert color here)", instead of just thinking of that person as a person, not a color.
