Rants etc.....

For fucks sake, stop being so paranoid.

It's not really paranoia... it's a rejection of a technical feature that's being forced on folks who'll never use it solely for the benefit of the CC companies. I'm not overly worried about somebody getting their hands on my card, I'm PO'd that the card company isn't giving me the option to disable the feature thus forcing me to accept an added risk (albeit minor) that comes with zero benefit to me.

It'd be like phone companies deciding that every phone will now be a video conference phone with no ability to turn off the camera.

Pretty sure most POS terminals limit contactless to $100 anyway to prevent fraud. Contactless payment speeds up the grocery checkout line significantly, especially in the express line... though often you get the odd person paying for a $2.69 loaf of bread in exact change down to the penny.

If you think contactless is to benefit solely CC companies, you're wrong IMO. It benefits everybody.

Privacy concerns in the same breath as CC? Please. Stop using plastic payment in any form, not just contactless.

W.R.T. contactless buyers spending more, yes, it's one less barrier to opening the wallet. Again, if that worries you, switch back to jars of cash for each day like that lady on that TLC show recommends.

No need for me to stop.... I already do 95% of my transactions using cash. I don't use debit unless I just haven't had a chance to make it to my bank's ATM.

And yeah.... I'm one of those folks who root through their pockets for exact change, but in my defence I wouldn't do it in the express lane. :)

If you use a computer or smart phone, own a smart tv or any other internet connected appliance then you do not have privacy. SSwilson, the "1984" analogy is spot on, smart TV's have been doing that for years.

Guilty of using an internet connected PC, but my smart phone usage is relatively limited (mainly for my convenience and most certainly not even daily let alone 24/7) and IoT devices have absolutely no place in my home.

Silly thing is that I'm not overly concerned about what the government is and isn't doing outside of me not making it easy for them to get the info, I'm more concerned with what corporate canada is trying to do with big data. I wouldn't let them set up a camera in my home to track my movements, I have no desire to allow them to do basically the same thing with my data.

As far as the argument that "everybody gains" when it comes to contactless pay goes.... I'd counter that any form of non-cash payments inserts a costly middleman into the transaction and that while debit transactions are a reasonable (and most likely cost effective) per-transaction fee, CC cards (especially the premium ones) add a high overhead that ultimately costs me at the cash register through higher prices.

You don't have privacy PERIOD even outside of that. You are probably on camera more times than you'd like to know.

Let's be honest... Privacy stopped existing once the industrial revolution and the world exploded.l

I agree even Windows tracks you which is why I really try not to use or give out or leave to much Personal Info on my PC , my Smart phone is the same. hell if I could I would be running Linux for my PC's OS but I game and most games that I play don't run on Linux very well if at all . and with all the Social Media out there every little bit people post could be data mined and after a while ( most Millennials don't seem to care) they can have a full profile on you. as for Credit cards I prefer cash but if need to Order online well Crdit card , then again there is more personal Information that I just gave away on line . there is no such thing as Real privacy anymore .

Ugh.... Lindsay Canada Day celebration had to be cancelled because of torrential rain all day and funnel clouds. Oh yeah, no power either from about 3PM to 8PM. They managed to get the fireworks off somehow at 9:40PM, but there was a stiff constant 50km/h+ wind. Many struggled to get airborne. Mother nature sure decided we were not supposed to have a fun day yesterday......

@ Shadowmeph: I agree but honestly I no longer really care or try to conceal myself on my PC. I have to do everything on it so at this point in history, there is no hiding from the Google monster. I don't like it, but at this point in my life I have just given in to the reality of what it is. I take my time, at least, to change up passwords and other common sense internet use, but I would say I am getting lazy in my old(er) age.
