I typically run some kind of hardware level ad block (default unifi one now, and DNS blocking profiles under OpnSense). Every now and then I need to disable it to allow some kind of blocked tracking function and I typically leave it off for a day or so just to see what the "normal" ad experience is like.
I'm amazed at how toxic it really is, especially when browsing on a mobile device. Sidebar and/or banner ads are one thing, but that's apparently not in-your-face enough for the marketing vultures. Overlays that routinely cover/mask 30 - 50% of the viewing screen seem to be the norm.
It's nutz!!!!!
Further to this.... I'm especially surprised how often the malware "mcaffee is running on your PC" popup shows up while browsing relatively mainstream news sites through flipboard. Presumably it's being auto loaded through one of the ad server services and is a case of whack-a-mole for the "legit" ad services.
