Rants etc.....

Holy shit what's fuck around. So we got winter tires and rims put on at the Toyota dealership when my wife got her new car last year. The tires suck, she went off the road in not terrible conditions, car took zero damage fortunately.

Wife essays fuck that I want the same tires as the last car, x-ice Michelins. She orders the tires based off the spec of the car. Little did we know they put 17's on the winter rims, didn't say shit, and didn't think to check, why would I. Spec is 18".

Apparently Toyota doesn't make steel rims in 18". So I'm already there for the appointment and get the bad news 10 minutes later. All X-ice l, including 17", are out of stock and weeks away. Fuck...

Order new rims (alloy) and 1 week later finally get 18" rims. Tires are on but what a complete waste of my time.
That’s terrible! Not uncommon to downsize rims for winter tires (I almost always do it), but you should have been told.

What were the winter tires that sucked?

Bridgestone. All I can say is, I'll never buy tires from a dealership again. They don't stand behind their tires or honor warranty. We have to deal with it via the manufacturer on your own. Hard pass.

Ugh. I have always had good luck with Bridgestone blizzaks. Glad to hear the car, and more importantly your wife are ok.

Very surprise to hear X-Ice having grip problem. But I switched over to Firestone because they were the cheapest stuff for my Subaru. I also downsized from 16 stock to 15 inch rims for snowtire while keeping the same rolling size (taller sidewalls).

I'm also getting crazy delays from UPS. Looks like they are stuck in Alberta due to snow storms then interior and Fraser Valley got hit hard by rain and part of Hwy 1 was underwater. Suppose to get here on the 19th but just got to GVRD processing center on 21st.

It could also be the car itself, not just the tires. All that computer-controlled crap in modern cars has almost caused accidents for me a few times.

The last incident felt like I slammed into a wall. I was driving my 2025 RAV4 slowly toward a stop sign—no cars around. I was about four car lengths away, going maybe 20 km/h. A person on a bicycle was coming around the corner on the opposite side of the road, nowhere near my vehicle. Out of nowhere, the RAV4’s brakes locked up. No warning lights came on, and my chest slammed into the seatbelt.

Some of the roads I drive on are patched and uneven, which makes the car bounce. I don’t even know the speed limit on that side road, but I go pretty slow , sometimes I see warning lights flash on the dash. The vehicle has about 100,000 km on it, so it’s possible this isn’t just a tire issue. It could be the stability or traction control sensors locking the wheels, causing the vehicle to lose control.

I’ve heard of other people having similar issues on slippery roads where the computer locks the tires, they lose control, and the vehicle ends up in a ditch.

This is why I don’t like newer cars. Even my 2006 Lexus caused problems in the snow. The traction control kicked in and stopped the car, and I nearly got rear-ended by someone flying up behind me at around 100 km/h. They barely missed me and crossed over the centre median, almost hitting a big rig. The system sensed my tires spinning, tried to correct, and ended up locking them instead.

It is common to undersize winter rims to get extra sidewall. Even the frontier is speed 18s for the SL but most of the common winters tire sets are 17s. Also cheaper than the usally lower profile summer times.

The rest of it super annoying

That's most likely the auto brake feature which you can't turn off. Had similar experience driving my sister's 2022 Mazda CX30 where I didn't brake hard enough because the guy in front of me is about to make a left turn.

I wonder if wheel speed sensor are consumable items. My old BMW had issue where I try to pull into a curb side spot and it lands right on top of a pile of wet leafs and the brakes started to freak out. No warning lights but took it to service because I sense something is wrong. Turns out the ABS sensor or speed sensor plus the ABS module (the thing attached to the pump) are done. The car was at around 190K KM or so.
