Rants etc.....

Haven't used a dealership service since 2005 as I found a better 3rd party service provider that specialize in BMW and another one that specialize in Subaru. From the horror stories I read on /justrolledintotheshop, most of the guys at dealerships are either suffering or idiots.

Ya this is the only dealership I have ever used. My wife's whole family used to go there, so they always took good care of us, but that was also when they were owned and run by a local Orillia family. None of his kids wanted the dealership since they were all doctors and lawyers and whatnot, so an investment group in southern Ontario that owns a crap load of other dealerships made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

For customers, it means a 30-500% increase in prices for work and parts; they also had a large number of there tech's leave, so they lost a lot of good people. Once the staff we have known for years started to tell us to take our vehicles somewhere else, we knew it was time to leave, that would have never happened before because all those staff members knew we weren't getting ripped off, but alas, all this has changed.

My rant for this week is tires. I went to put on the summer tires and realized the tread was lower than I would want to use, 1mm above the wear bars. Now, in dry weather they would be fine. I live in Muskoka, so heavy rain is a thing. So out I went to get 4 new shoes for the car, 701CAD, not bad. lucky to get them on sale.

The thing that worries me the most is that when our dealership took the summers off, in November, I asked them to check the tires for next summer and tell me if I needed a new set. They said nope, they are good for at least another year. 🤦‍♂️

Sadly, we don't use them anymore since they got bought out, went from family-run to corporation-run, prices went up a lot and staff told us to go elsewhere
Sucky situation.

I have always been told and gone by (what I believe is law, atleast in NS): 2mm is minimum legal (should be the wear bars), 4mm is recommend to start looking for replacement. I don’t generally replace in the season, so if they are <4mm when I remove them for summer/winter swaps, I have them replaced before they go back on at the next seasonal swap.

Is it normal for a laptop's external HDMI port to default @ 30hz when connected to a 4K TV?

I was testing my intel whitebook (2070 max q) to see if it had enough grunt to push 4K 60 fps Plane 9 (music visualizer) and initially couldn't get it above 30fps. It looked like it was capped, but everything I was reading suggested that it was a proper HDMI 2.0+ so should have no problem doing 60hz. I didn't initially think to check the display settings for 60hz vice 30hz. Switched it over to 60hz and everything seems to be working.

Just seems strange to me that it doesn't default to 60hz since that's the new standard.

Oh, and it's got enough grunt to keep it above 30, and pegs 60fps for 95% of the screens, but dips down as low as 40 fps on a few of the screens, so it's not quite ready to take over duties from an RX 6800. :)

Is the cable capable of 4K60?

Yeah, it was doing 4K/60hz out of a desktop rx 6800. (and I tried a different cable just to be sure).

It's all good.... it was just the windows frequency setting being set @ 30 vice 60.

edit: Testing complete, and I think I'm going to stick with the gym desktop. The 2070 would mostly do the trick if I were willing to drop back down to 100% rendering (currently @ 150%) but even then it would be dropping down to just above 30fps on the occasional screen.

I'm leaning towards it being a memory limitation as opposed to a gpu crunching power one. The GPU never goes above 50% usage even during the heavy fps drops.

It wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't a measurable but small battery usage difference with some laptop between 30/60, making it a "power savings setting" or something like that.

Last year, Aliexpress seemed to have TONS of days where they was like 15%+ Rakuten ebates. But this year...Nothing. Has been stuck @ 2% all year. My card has like $600+ in it just waiting for a sale. Starting to think, it is never going to come.
