Rants etc.....

My God, having reliable internet is a godsend that you never think about when it works, but is intensely frustrating when it doesn't. I've been with Shaw for years now (the only other competition in Manitoba is Bell/MTS, and their max speed to my house is 25Mbps, compared to Shaw's 1 Gbps for not much more money). Shaw's system is Fiber to the node, and then Coax to all the houses in the neighbourhood, and coax in my house, obviously. I live in a house from the 70's, so you can imagine each owner has made their mark, with coax all over the place.

Anyway, for years, my Shaw internet was unreliable. It was fine if we were only using it lightly, you know, media streaming, but as soon as I'd start torrenting, and then try to log into a game server, or watch some Netflix, our internet would drop out and we'd need to reset the router. I was getting dropped from multiplayer game servers left and right. At one point, I was resetting our router daily, sometimes twice daily. We'd had a Shaw tech out a few times, but they were unable to diagnose and fix the issue. It was incredibly frustrating, and then once COVID hit and my wife started working from home, it started to impact her work. I called Shaw and gave them one more chance to fix it. The tech showed up, but because companies had freshly implemented COVID policies (this was summer of 2020), he couldn't actually come IN the house. Nevertheless, he went to the neighbourhood box and tested the connection to our house, and didn't see anything. Then he came up with the bright idea of just replacing all the COAX cable ends in line from where the cable enters the house, to where it ends at my router. He still couldn't come into the house, so he handed me the tool and a bunch of ends, demonstrated how to do it, and then I went and actually physically changed all the cable ends.

It actually worked. We've had rock solid internet now for about a year and a half, and man is it NICE. I don't even think about it any more.

Here's the problem with his little test from the box to the house. He HAS to overload the connection to see any problems. The stupid little light test is not any different than you using your internet lightly. My buddy had the same exact problem as you. It ended up being the coax damaged by the previous owner when he installed his deck, in the dirt, below a support. I found it nearly cut in half. Guess which stupid test didn't find anything. Yep, you guessed it.

Coax and water + years result in shitty internet. My old Telus connection on, yep you guessed it, coax, was fine for nextflix, but if my wife opened Facebook on her cellphone or I tried to play a game, it died. Just like you are describing.

I'd put money on the connection from the node to your house.

It was literally the cable ends in my house. At one point, MTS had been in there and replaced all the COAX ends with their shitty ends that were built to a different spec than what SHAW needs. Replacing them with Shaw ends fixed the problem completely.

I've had reliable internet with 100% uptime for about a year and a half now.

Off topic to the current comments, but man I am tired of sites and apps "helping me" by serving me the content they think I'll like better or be more interested in.

All the social media sites do it. YouTube does it. News apps do it. It is to the point now that I do a mental calculation that goes "well, I'd like to read that article, seems interesting, but I'm not sure I want a feed FULL of those articles tomorrow. Meh, I guess I'm not that interested in it..." Scroll on. How stupid is that? The greatest advancement in information sharing and technology in decades, maybe ever, and we've reduced it to that. There was a TED talk a while back that talked about this issue with search engines and how it shapes our view of issues and topics.

I know there is more that goes on in the world than video cards, tech news, and the occasional astronomical discovery! ;)

Printed news papers have been doing similar things. Where a newspaper serves different regions it will tweak contents, titles etc for the "target"

Yeah, I get that. It is all part of the marketing, advertising, various agendas, etc. I just hate it because you never really know whose version of the world you're looking at. But we all know that "unbiased" coverage or journalism is a thing of the past... if it even was a thing of the past. At least it appeared to exist when I was younger. Now agencies don't even try anymore lol

more often than not I get a warning tone on my laptop telling me that my Cell phone isn't connected to windows, and I am not sure why my Andriod phone would be connected to my laptop unless I am transferring files via cable or sometimes charging my phone, its irritating here that tone going off when I am elsewhere I can not figure out why it is doing this, Bluetooth is turned off

Could be this.

Worked 15 hours yesterday getting a report done that goes to the Feds. I'm beat. Tried to sleep in, but I'm so used to getting up at 6 or 7 I didn't have much luck.
I hate that I don't get to sleep until after 2 am but I always wake up between 6-8 sometimes I wake up at 333am then of course when Ido wake up I toss and turn even though I can sleep into 10 am I still get up no later than 930am. on some days I look like a drugging because of sunken eyes dark circles around my eyes hehe
I also find that on days where I can go to sleep early someone or something usually loud noises wakes me up and I cannot go back to sleep and it always seems to happen just as I am falling asleep its like something is watching me snickering while they wake me up lol

So the shit has kinda hit the fan at my house, My wife is very pissed at her mother who had to get tested for covid today cause she was hanging out with her friend who runs a moving/packing business and she never told her that she was the one going into customers homes to pack their stuff ( in Toronto ) cause she short staff. which means if she gives it to my wife then she won't be able to go to a conference that we have already paid for, oh ya it's in Florida lol. like I wasn't worried enough about my wife getting covid in Florida.

damn you covid, the health board said there doubtful that she has covid cause everyone is vaxxed up and it's against the odds but we will find out tomorrow
