Contraband at the stage I am in the game is worth far less than the Magpulse and other weapons and Suits I am picking up that sell for 5000+ Credits, so its not worth the hassle of going to the Den when I can just go elsewhere and sell the weapons from the ships I raid.
Early game, yes, just not where I am now.

Ship builder is where you want to go, just look and see what Shields are available to you as Class A and replace accordingly. The Upgrade system is a bit buggy and I don't really trust it.
Once you get a feel for actually using their ship builder, using the upgrade system is pointless. Also because it won't upgrade something in situ that does not mount the same as the prior one.

I.e. there could be a better engine than you currently have, but it mounts from the front and not the sides so it won't bring up the option for you because you have to change the location of where they go. This is where the Ship builder is key. Could be the same with the shields. Some are Top Mount, others are side mount.

Maybe I'll go onto Twitch once I get some more credits in the bank.

I just cleared my account again doing a major overhaul of two ships. I had rebuild one but I didn't like the end result in how it handled itself in space so I went back to Stroud to make some modifications. I like how I have the engine design and performance now vs what it was when it was originally rebuilt.

My next goal is to make some smaller fighters. I always push 40M with my ships. I need to start building smaller.

Got it. Thanks @Soultribunal ! That note about an upgrade vs. builder and how components fit is likely exactly the issue I'm having with the Razorleaf. I'll investigate that.

Searching, using info from yours and others comments, I also found this article. So Bethesda does provide some official guidance into this activity:

Interesting note (bold me):
"Select the option to view or modify your ship, then choose the ship you would like to modify, and press X on controller (B on keyboard) to get to the Ship Builder. From here you can either delete or move things piece by piece, or you can delete everything at one time to start from scratch."

So the bolded option would allow you to build a completely new ship, you just have to have a ship to select and delete everything from. Weird, but at least there is a way you can do a completely from scratch build. I thought you couldn't.

You always could build from scratch, you just needed a 'base' ship to do it. When you Delete all you get the credit sell value of the parts as well.

That is why my one ship from a previous post is still called (Its bugged) Crimson Fleet Captain. It was a ship I boarded and took back to my base and deleted all, rebuilding from the ground up.
Frontier too.

The only ships I have yet to do that too Ironically are the Razorleaf and the Freestar Fighter I got.

Everything else of mine is ground up from scratch builds. Realistically for me, that is the best way to do it. But its not for everyone because some of how they handle ship building in this game is flawed.
You can only get specialty parts direct from the Manufacturer. These are some of the Cockpits, Engines, Structural and Habs.
So if you want a Hybrid Deimos and HopeTech , you gotta fly to both places and piece it together, and it has to be in flyable condition to do that which sucks.
Hopefully that is eventually patched.

Still, overall its been a good experience now that I got the hang of it.
I have an 8 Ship fleet. 6 are full completions. 2 are unmodified, and 2 slots are open so I can keep pillaging my way across the galaxy.

*snip*
I guess that was just my confusion. I thought from a previous post that you (or someone?) had said it'd be nice if we had the option to just build from scratch. So I must have misinterpreted that statement.

I do think it would be nice to be able to access the Ship Builder, without a base ship to delete everything from, and just make a ship from nothing, if you know what I mean.

That was me, but maybe it was just a misinterpretation of what I was saying.

You cannot start a scratch build without a 'base' ship to do it with.
I.e. you can just start building a ship in one of your 10 open slots. You have to already 'own' something to do it.

Its a flaw, much like not being able to blueprint a ship or build it a bit at a time.
It always has to be flyable to get the damn thing around to each of the manufacturers.

This is the one I have used and it works great. You do need SFSE installed as well, but like I mentioned it has worked great without issue.

Patch dropped, 1.7.36, that adds the FOV slider in game. Official link: https://bethesda.net/en/game/starfield/article/5IleyfqI44NacBQGGC20Km/starfield-updates-1-7-36-october-09-2023#:~:text=A new update has been, other performance and stability improvements

To save others from hunting, the two sliders, one for first person and one for third, are under Accessibility in Settings. I went looking for it under Display, or Interface, but I guess what do I know? :)

Curiously it also adds better support for Intel Arc GPUs. I would not have thought that was much of a priority but there you go.
