Tbh, it's not just the injury/fatality aspect why I've never gotten back into it. Biking has a very small window for fun if you're doing it right.
In Edmonton you've basically got to wait until the gravel is cleaned off the road and the major potholes fixed (so we'll say Mid-may normally). You might think end of season is October, but riding on a bike is
cold as shit at 50kmh+ even in fall temperatures, so you're likely done riding at some point in September, especially if you're getting up early for work. That 4°C September morning ride sucks.
So Mid-May to Mid-Sept. 4 months isn't bad right?
Except that mid-July to mid-August bit where it's 30°C+ on your drive home also sucks. You can either;
A) wear the correct protective gear; jacket with a spine protector, gloves, boots past the ankles,
possibly riding pants. Then you'll sweat the whole damn time you're biking. Get stuck at a long light or in a turning lane. Now with no wind the heat of the engine goes straight from your bike to you and you sweat more. Hope you have good deodorant.
B) wear temperature appropriate but not protective gear; t-shit, light sweater, pants and sneakers. Occasionally have a bug smash into your chest on the henday, but otherwise pleasant. Hope you never have to skid as you'll leave all your skin behind.
I don't say this to discourage you, I like biking and I drive like an old man and it's still fun (with a comfortable bike at least), but when I realized I was only putting maybe 1000km on a bike in a year, and I could have
way more fun with a convertible, I gave up on biking, unless I move to the BC interior or something. Plus the next time I get fun toy, there's a whole host of 3rd and 4th gen MX-5s that'll be very affordable
Just... go into it with tempered expectations.
