I think that trend started back when people were mounting flat TVs above fireplaces, rather than putting a painting or whatever up there. Oh I definitely get why when it's over a fireplace (though that's a lousy place to put your TV), but when it's not. I remember when people visited our house when we built it 16 years ago, and the high mount was all the rage. We mounted our 50" plasma at eye level location (still there btw), just above the low entertainment centre, and people often said "Oh! You mounted your TV so low!!" And then they would watch something with us and go "This is way more comfortable and easy to see..."
