let's talk about coffee. :thumb:

as a teen, I loved strong dark coffee...now that I've matured (HAH! ) I prefer a very strong medium roast. I'd like to roast my own coffee...one day I will, but until then, my go-to is Doi Chaang. my wife prefer's Kicking Horse 454. funny it's named that as dark coffee has left caffeine than lighter roasts. :doh:

oh, must have cream, doesn't have to have sugar.

oddest cup of coffee? kopi luwak...almost 10 years ago now I guess. cup cost me about $30. h34r:

Ones which I am drinking right now are Social Coffee and Pilot Coffee, both local (to me), and both produce AWESOME beans! We have an awesome grinder + Gaggia Espresso machine at work and I make full use of it to make myself cappuccino first thing in morning, and black americanos for late afternoon.

On that note - anyone roast their own beans? I had a co-worker who did so at my last job, got them green and small batch roasted them fresh each morning.

In the last few months, I've bought a stepped and stepless grinder (Rocky and Fiorenzato F4E Nano V2, respectively), a Quick Mill Evolution 70 (model 3240) espresso machine, a Hario v60 (size 2), several AirScape canisters, a new tamper, a pocket size scale (for weighting out beans)... I think that is it. :shok:

Next up is either a Technivorm Moccamaster, or a goose-neck kettle for pour-overs; either the Stagg EKG or a variable Bonavita. Boiling water and me first think in the morning might not be the smartest combination.

Not sure about roasting my own coffee, just today I decided that I'll order an airpopper w. a green coffee sampler from sweetmarias.com in a few weeks, aka, after the grinder arrives, to give it a try. If I don't care for it, I am only out ~50 Cdn.

All through grad school (and beyond), I drank Starbucks, aka Charbucks. In the last few months, we've tried various coffees from 49th Parallel, Republica, Kicking Horse, Salt Spring Island... like U2, I still haven't found what I am looking for.

I've never been a big coffee fan. About 4 years ago I bought a french press and grinder for when I have company over, but I still never really got into it and always found I just never bothered since I'd have to grind the beans, clean the grinder and press (I use the grinder mostly for spices) and I just never wanted a coffee that badly. I actually had a Breville espresso machine as well and basically found myself in the same situation.

Since then I've started using espresso in my baking, mostly devil's food cakes, skillet cake etc and decided to get a Nespresso Vertuo Deluxe so I could quickly make espresso and have actually started drinking coffee with some skim ultrafiltered milk. So far I'm pretty happy with it. I know purists will say 'it's not as good as true steam pump espresso' etc. but I can't really tell much of a difference between the breville and nespresso espresso pods, and certainly it's not a big enough difference for baking or lattes, maybe if you were drinking the espresso straight.
Even with the convenience of the Nespresso I only really have a coffee every 3-4 days now.

I've been roasting since last March; currently drinking Rwandan "Milles Collines" Peaberry. Recently discovered that (some/many of) my beans taste better if they've rest ~4 days when used for drip coffee. Espresso beans always need to be rested.

To update my previous post, I opted for a Technivorm Moccamaster.

Can anyone recommend a few good coffee roasters in Vancouver area? I stick to JJ Beans whole beans and get a cup of Starbucks if I really need a hit while on the street. When I'm down in Point Roberts, I usually pick up a bag from the Point Roberts Coffee operating out of the Shell gas station. Nespresso is pretty good but investing in the machine and pods doesn't really interest me. Right now I'm using Haro V60 pour over which does the trick.
