Sounds like it isn't written by Rowe at all. Just using his universe.

Some reviews had issues w/ characters and others say it is pretty much entirely just combat.

Wings of War - The World War II Fighter Plane that Saved the Allies and the Believers Who Made It Fly – by David & Margaret White, 2022. The story of the p51 Mustang (the WW2 aircraft Tom Cruise is working on at the beginning of Top Gun: Maverick & then flies at the end (which he apparently owns). The book covers a wide base of history leading up to the man (& crew) who designed & built the aircraft in 102 days. A lot of added historical info I've never come across before on the aircraft industry as well as the people involved.
