The "What book are you reading" Thread

Managed to snag a very good hardcover copy of this some years back. It's pretty comprehensive.

The Mustang was great for what it was designed for ie. high altitude run and gun.(when it got the right engine). Not so great for ground shootem'up in the latter part of War II and as it was used in Korea. The Thunderbolt with the big air cooled radial was much better for the ground game. The T-bolt also did quite well in the high altitude run and gun, it just didn't have quite the range capability of the efficient Mustang until the N model came along late in WarII for the Pacific Theatre.

It would be rare for me to read a book just because Bill Gates recommended it. But his synopsis (on the cover) is accurate. However, it stretches from very early history well into modern times. Very readable. Looking forward to the author's other books. Learned a lot, but could easily debate some of his premises & perspective towards the end of the book.

The Guardian newspaper says this: "Yuval Noah Harari’s account of how we conquered the Earth astonishes with its scope and imagination.

Sounds intriguing!

Another history book with a different perspective. It reexamines & modernizes earlier foundational historical accounts. Many of our earlier historical account are based on older theories; even now we are still continuing to discover new archaeology sites that add more information or that challenge older assertions & assumptions:
as societies become larger, more complex, wealthy and “civilized”, they inevitably become less equal.

Yeah what I thought........

I'm alarmed... it would take a lot to change my mind on ignoring global warming & the damage humans are doing. It's fairly obvious (to me) that local weather patterns have changed dramatically where I've lived. The Doomsday clock was moved closer to midnight recently due to global warming and the threat of nuclear war (again). Doubt that we've advanced technology enough to kill the planet, so it will survive. There's a lot of distressed peoples trying or having to move somewhere else...
