The "What book are you reading" Thread

My kids always get reading time before bed. My oldest is 7 and, although he can read, he really likes to be read to when it comes to some of the more YA/teen content as it's a bit tough for him. He's ripped through Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, some Hardy Boys and the Warriors. So we started the Belgariad the other day and we'll see how far we get. It may be just a bit beyond him, but so far he's liking it.

Author was just a terrible person. But I do think most proceeds from his books go to child abuse prevention iirc.
I did not know either of those things. I've had these books since I was a kid. I've looked in to it now that you've mentioned, and I'm surprised.
The Belgariad was probably my favorite of the 'sword and sorcery' fantasy series I read as a kid, liked it even more than the Weis & Hickman Dragonlance chronicles.

Once you found out about Edding's child abuse, ~12 years before the novel was published, some people have speculated the focus on the MC's childhood that it was an attempt to write something redemptive or atoning, but given how horrible the details of the abuse were, I'm a skeptical. Typical of 'interior/deep-red state' the jail term for child abuse back then was grossly insufficient.

As much as I enjoyed them, I'm not sure I'll ever re-read them "yaarrrr'd" or not.

The Apple A Delicious History, Sally Coulthard, 2025. Interesting & informative. Apple seeds are unique. Planting an apple seed from any type of apple will not grow into the same type of tree. It's a rogue; you could get a new type of apple. So that old saying isn't true - 'the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.' A MacIntosh seed won't get you a Macintosh tree. To get an apple orchard all of the same type is only possible by grafting.

Back in the time of Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman, 1774–1845) a lot of apples grown were for hard cider.

Looking at the cover art on those Travis Baldree novels makes me wonder if there's a small cadre of artists who do the majority of fantasy book artwork. They look awfully similar to other fantasy books I've read/seen.

Even the artwork on the L E Modesitt books I have is very similar to other authors. I don't think it is a large pool or artists that make the covers

Unexpectedly, the 1st chapter deals with a lot of AI history, starting back in the 60s & 70s, along with language & linguistics. Chapter 2 about the history of how psychology (& scvience) shifted it's focus over the years. Back in the late 1800s & early 1900s psychology & science (& religion) did attempt to understand human capabilities but then split up in various ways.
