Thoughts on 3840x1600 vs ????

HDR has a couple of big issues.

First, the Windows implentation is bad. If you enable HDR, the desktop is in HDR and then all SDR apps (like 99.9% of everything) is simulated in HDR. Brightness is all out of wack. Switch between an true HDR app and not, and the screen flashes green a few times. So you really need to enable / disable HDR every time you use it.

Secondly HDR is IMO useless w/o a large amount of of backlight dimming areas or OLED. That display has 8 areas. So anytime an increased peak brightness is required, you'll get massive blooming.

Also personally $1500 for a VA panel seems craziness to me.

I see ...I have read a fair bit the last few days re: HDR....apparantly the Asus model is "true" HDR 1000 vs 400 600 etc......some isues with fonts on the desktop, however a review I read recomended disabling HDR in Windows and enable it only "in game" thru "in game" video options settings........
....I really do like my present Dell Alienware Ultra Wide monitor,,,,,,43" is out of the question.....I do like the 32-34" Curved for desktop though......and am entertaining going 4K to justify a 3090 purchase I suppose :)

HDR 1000 would mean 1000 nits peak brightness. But lets say the sun in a game needs that 1000 nits, because the display only has 8 sections of LED backlight, 1/8th of the screen gets 1000 nits, so everything around the sun will be washed out. Until mini-LED or OLED work their way in to more monitors, I don't think HDR is quite there yet.

Also the 4:2:2 chroma subsampling you are referring to about text. It is so annoying. Even font in game looks bad. I'd rather use a display in 8-bit colour than 10-bit + 4:2:2 subsampling.

With already having the Alienware 34" I just couldn't justify getting anything that isn't a big step up. That said if I didn't have this and was looking right now then I could understand the 3840*1600, but would most likely just end up picking a proper 4k.

Now what I want, and I don't know if any actually exist yet is a 34-38" 21:9 5k2k (5120 x 2160) @120hz or higher with G-Sync and HDR. So I'll be waiting as I do love this monitor but hopefully by the time I go to retire this one there will be something like that or better. And a card that can really push it as well.

^^^^^ Yeah I completely agree.....on both counts...perhaps HDR isnt quite there yet (distorted fonts in game would drive me nuts).......and yeah, I think most of us purchased our Dell monitors around the same time.......so not all that long ago and it really is a great monitor, no complaints..................I think the 3080 will pair up nicely with it ....perhaps we'll get closer to the 120FPS / 120Hz on the big titles !!

I thought VA panels still had some benefits, depending on your use case. For example I thought the blacks were supposed to be deeper and look better than on IPS, and that there was less of the IPS glow on a VA panel.

Maybe I understood that wrong or that is old info?

Concerning HDR... that really isn't a big draw for me at all. I'm fine with the colours I currently see in games. But I am not doing any professional-level photo or video editing. I can see that it might be more attractive to people there?

I think I could make the 43" work :) Have to push it to the back of my desk. My current one is 34" ultrawide too. But I certainly don't want to give up sync technology. Very happy with G-Sync, and I am thinking although I would like the larger and 4K for flight/space sims especially, that needs a new GPU anyway so that is very likely what would come first.

Maybe by the time I have to open up my loop again for some reason ;)

VA is pretty good for media consumption due to the better blacks. But the poor pixel response can make them ghost badly, especially with blacks. Coming from a TN, my VA 32" LG 850F was so disappointing when it came to motion handling.

I've said it before but the 3440x1600 seems like a sweet spot to me in ultrawide anyway. Good vertical space without having to push the full 4K.
