SDR content (mostly desktop) is still not perfect when HDR is enabled. There is a new(ish) SDR brightness bar which seems to help quite a bit, but it's still not what I'd call perfect.

I just came across the option to toggle HDR on/off using win-alt-b with suggestions that folks only enable HDR when they intend to game.

Anybody else using this option, or are you sticking with HDR 24/7 and living with slightly washed out SDR content?

You can use AutoActions to automatically enable HDR when launching specific apps.

But since upgrading to Windows 11 I leave HDR enabled all the time. But in my case the image is not washed out at all. I would assume your display isn't an OLED or has local dimming zones. So the monitor is receiving a signal for high brightness in areas, but it can't compensate for the dark areas. Hence looking washed out.

Maybe play around with the saturation slider in the Windows calibration tool?

I leave it always on but also running OLED. I use saturation 10% and 25% SDR brightness. Monitor itself is set to 20 brightness. Feels like I run my displays much dimmer than most people though.

Is it the brightness or the contrast though? I think the saturation setting could counter the contrast. For me, if I turn off HDR now, I find SDR way too contrasty, with reds especially being overblown.

I'm in the same situation as @lowfat -- HDR is enabled all the time in Windows 11. I haven't had any issues with it looking washed out. I did tweak some display setting in AMD Adrenaline to make things look as I wanted.

But that is a nice keyboard shortcut to know. Works as advertise... not that I ever doubted you (y) :)

Well you jinxed me @sswilson as now even though the HDR toggle is on, I can tell it's not using the right profile as everything looks too bright/washed out. I have to toggle it off/on to fix it when waking the monitor from sleep.

I'm also running OLED and I honestly can't run SD. Everything with HDR on is just right. Solid color accuracy, no overblown saturation, no bright spots... If I flip to SDR it's heavily over saturated. I even run triple monitor with HDR on my primary and secondary, and SDR RGB on the third; zero issues on any of them in HDR constant. The only oddity is screenshots. If I take a screenshot with ANY screenshot software, the screenshot shows as washed out as if viewing SDR content incorrectly, even though that's not at all what my viewing experience is.

I think @lowfat is correct on the analysis of OLED vs IPS/VA on issues localizing backlighting.

Are you running constant HDR? Or auto HDR? I know Windows auto HDR is very buggy, particularly with gamma adjustment.

If you're running the Alienware monitor several of us have; I'm running Smart HDR in preset mode: Standard. Game Enhance Mode: Off, Console Mode: On

Constant HDR, and no, Samsung G85SD. It did firmware update itself last week, so perhaps it's a combination of Windows and that :(

You can't take screenshot in HDR. Well you can, but there is no way to view them online properly. Kind of silly that it's still an issue. I've since just started taking a photo if I need pics of games.
