Would this stuff work together? Be nice to have the switches powered off the main switch. I'd be able to use my expensive power filter which is far better than my battery back up devices.

Do you need/want a managed POE switch?

It's typically cheaper to buy ubiquiti/unifi parts at the manufacturer's website.

The flex-minis are only $40 each, but they don't appear to list the PoE switch (might be a US only model?).

I'm also not so sure on MemX's description of a "managed" switch..... the flex-minis are definitely layer 2 as opposed to layer 3.

edit: The Lite 8 PoE on the manu site is a bit cheaper, but I'm not sure it's the same quality as the one you've got selected at MemX.

The 8 port isn't that much more to be fair. I'm just after the Poe matched with the smaller ones. Probably a 100 feet to the basement switch 40ish to the office.

I bought an APC power filter for my receiver etc that is powering the current 8 port netgear switch. Guaranteed to protect against black outs and brownouts.

I may at some point build a subnet to keep the office computers seperate from the kids stuff. As they get older they get bolder. Last thing I need is some clown hacking the system for Bitcoin because my son opened a 50 million dollar present from the current Nigerian prince.

The "lite" is 8 port (4+4PoE) as well, and according to the US website I can find it on the one you've listed from MemX isn't a layer 3 switch either so you may have to look at a different model if you want the ability to do Vlans.

Hopefully others will chime in here....

I have not tried to mess with ubiquiti hardware without a cloud key or a UDMpro calling the shots. And the only switch I have played with has been the 8 port aggregate. The PoE switches I bought were cheap TP link switches simply to power the cameras without needing half a dozen individual injectors. So I want to avoid saying much as it might be 100% wrong with what your proposing.

For example a UDM-Pro-SE could do the vlans and power the switches but not 100% sure about what your proposing.

MemEx will price match but not price beat the ubiquiti website pricing by the way. And if your in person sometimes they grumble about it ;)

Edit: correction used ubiquiti point to point hardware to bridge between two building but hardware specifically designed to run on its own without management hardware.

Are you in a hurry? Because the 2.5gb mini switches are coming soon.

Memory express will price match them if the item is in stock.

The 8 port one you have there is what I would call "EOL" in that it's been replaced by various other newer products now. The Lite PoE is probably the closest replacement, though the Ultra w/ 60W adapter would also cover the same use case.

As mentioned above, the 2.5G Flex Mini is coming soon, it will have proper VLAN support along with Spanning Tree. I would be inclined to think a 2.5G "Ultra" or "Lite" switch must be coming too with PoE support. If you can hold out to see if such a thing comes out, I think it would make sense to do all 2.5G these days.

I believe to do any sort of configuration of these, you need to run the "UniFi Network Application" somewhere, on either Windows or Linux. Unless you buy one of their gateway products that run the Network app natively. I don't think they even sell the cheap CloudKey anymore.

Unless you're really buying into the UniFi ecosystem, I'm not sure I'd recommend their switches standalone.

I was wondering about recommending one of the 1G cloud gateways for that very reason, but the "ultra" is $170. The other option (if a person didn't want to go full 2.5G with the max) would be to look at the unifi express which is essentially a wifi 6 AP with a single WAN and Lan port that runs the network app. The biggest problem I see with the express (aside from the 1G ports) is that it's limited to 4 more unifi network devices.
