WE'RE BACK! Threadripper 2950X Performance Review Comment Thread

I think TR2 is a wonderful addition to AMDs lineup. Its a true HEDT CPU. Yes that means average joe need not apply... but that is the way it should be. These beasts are made for content creators who need a ton of cores+threads.... at a price that smokes Intel in the overall value department. Would love to see a follow on review on how memory clock speed impacts overall performance... as it played a HUGE role in Ryzen and TR1 overall performance numbers!

It has been TOO LONG since the last review (HWC withdraw for me). The price delta makes CPUs like this a no brainer, unless you are positive you are in a scenario where Intel is going to run faster and the “savings” of that single threaded performance will pay for itself.

Nice review! I was surprised with power consumption being very good for the performance. Keep them coming.

actually, that is a concern, as the RAM default for TR2 is 2933mhz, but it was only given 2666mhz memory, so the review may be a bit BIAS for Intel because of that. yes, it's faster memory than what Intel has for base/default, but everything should be tested as per the platform base/default and then compared more on par with as equivalent specs as possible.

Would you say the 2950X is faster than a 6850k running at 4.2GHz? I know from a logical standpoint, I should just buy a 8700k or even a 2700X, but I feel like being illogical :bleh:

Really just gaming, I virtualize Windows Server/Clients occasionally but not something that is 24/7. I have my Hyper-V designated computers for that. Though I've been on "HEDT" platforms since the 3930k and maybe even the 920 if you'd classify that as such. Don't feel like going back to "consumer" platforms.

Plus I'd honestly like to just support AMD at this point.

OR go Ryzen 2. 8 cores is no joke. Take the savings on the cpu and mobo and cooling... and drop in two video cards instead of one. ;)

True. But with games... eight w/ 16 threads is more than enough for now and the foreseeable future (most are using what... four cores these days at most?). IMHO... TR2 is a beast but would be like using a Mac truck to go pick up a quart of milk. Sure you CAN do it... but its not optimal. Better to drop the coin on GPUs than not really needed CPU. Of course... if you plan on using say 4 NVMe SSDs plus two gpus then yeah its a no brainer the other way.

Dont get me wrong I use an Intel 12 core and an Intel 14 core as my gamer rigs (and work and video processing and and and) so if money is not a concern... go for it. MOAR POWER is MOAR POWER!! :haha:

Well... that was the other topic of discussion... I'd like to do 4 NVMe SSD's and be devoid of SATA entirely. I have about 3TB of storage used in my PC currently (total capacity 480GB+2TB+2TB in SSDs, 3TB HDD), some of it's replica of what's on my NAS so I can likely cut it down to about 2TB. I was thinking maybe 4x1TB NVMe drives since they're somewhat reasonably priced, but I think Samsung is the only choice? Though I guess I could keep one, or both, of the 2TB MX300 SATA SSDs.

The dual GPU front... I don't think there's any point in buying another 1080 Ti at the moment, but maybe with the 1180/2080/whatever it's called...

And my cooling costs will end up around the same either way. I want to get one of the EK Monoblocks.

It feels like TR2 keeps the most doors open...

Aside from Samsung there are the WD Black NVMe drives. I have been pleased with them at work. But it is the extra PCIE lanes that does have me thinking about AMD. I already have the dual 1080ti's and would like to get a new NVMe drive as well. Then again I'm guessing I'll end up going the i9 9900K route, maybe depending on price.
