Help me pick a folding GPU

IMO a 9800GX2 isn't worth it because of the high power consumption. You can get just about the same PPD from an overclocked GTX275 with much less power use and less heat. A GTX295 would be the best option if you can go up to that price level.
Really? I've owned 3 GTX275s with the shaders oc'ed until they screamed and none matched the ppd of the 4 GX2s I have / had.

The 275s netted 10k each, while the GX2 can manage 12k easily at stock.

As for the "high" temps, some folders can be rather stupid. They don't skimp on the CPU cooling, but don't bother much with the fan speed when GPU folding... get that fan cranked up at 100%. All 4 GX2s I had never reached above 85C.

Jeez...

I haven't owned a GX2, but typical PPD figures I've seen from people who have owned them were about 10k per card on average. Even if they do put out 12k or so, from an energy-efficiency standpoint I still think GTX275s are a better choice. But I suppose it depends on the situation.

This statement is plain wrong. I have owned and used both GX2s and 275s for folding (amongst others). For a single slot folding project, the GX2 is better than the 275. Now, let's talk about the GTX285 - then your statement hits the nail. The 285 (which I have owned too) is a much better folder than the GX2 for a single slot project.

Like I said, those numbers were based on what I've seen from other people. I have no experience with it personally. Since you have first-hand experience with it, I accept that your statements are more correct than mine.
These graphs might be of some help to you.
Those graphs are worthless and filled with bad data.

Honestly, for the price of the GX2s vs 295s. Id go with the GX2. Hell get TWO if PPD is the most important factor! ;)

Unless I see any gx2s for sale then I am getting a 295. Then I can always add another 295 and like 20k more ppd instead of 2 gx2s maxibg out my gpu ppd since I have no more room
