Kinda tempting for the temperatures and acoustics, but I'd take a $300 480 over one... but I don't see any of these alleged great 480 deals.

these are supposed to be cheaper to make than the 480's, so the profits are there for sure :)

ppl that didnt get gf100 may probably get these unless, as stated, are waiting for ati's parts. when they come.

besides power consumption, well not stellar difference there, but an important one in noise and especially temps, anyone with an oc'ed 480 shouldn't feel the necessary urge to get these.

i wonder how much difference for the average professional the undercutting of the gf100 will make.

Then those people asking for that are full of themselves.

Show me anywhere where someone is selling for that low. Look at all the different forums and ebay, etc and all are still selling above $400.

The 580 is 20% faster not 200%. So asking for $300 is absurd. At the most the 480 is worth $450 new and 400 used.

I would hate to buy a 480 now and then see a quieter 560/570 with comparable performance released in the not too distant future -- which, of course, is purely speculative. Ditto for the 69x0 cards.

I remember when the 3870X2 came out, and how impressed I was with the 2-GPU-1-PCB design over the (then) 2XPCB that Nvidia cards were using.... then I saw first hand the issues folks were having with them, and in all honesty, nothing I've seen/heard to date convinces me that it's gotten much better over the years.

I'd personally go for a 2 card crossfire/sli solution if I really wanted the kind of performance that recent 2GPU (AMD or Nvidia) cards have put out, unless it was a specialized application like trying to fill 4 slots of a folding farm.

Then maybe you should read some updated reviews, or visit forums besides HC. The main problem you are refering to is early ATI/NV multi-gpu drivers. The 7800GX2 was probably the worst dual GPU card I've owned. The 9800GX2 was better, but game support for it was still very bad. I took a break from dual GPU cards and got back into it with the 4870x2...I had two of those in quadfire and they worked very well. I currently have two 5870's and am extremely pleased. Now two GTX 580's are on the way and I can't wait. The difference between two seperate single GPU's vs a single PCB with multiple GPU's is very small so being turned off by one and not the other makes little sense with current drivers.

When you say "partially based off on app detection", does that mean the card's throttling behaves differently if you try to run fuNmark.exe or Definitely_Not_OCCT.exe?

Since you mentioned that I realized something. I thought I'd commend Sky for being the only reviewer out there (at least out of the dozen or so reviews I've read so far) for figuring out how the throttling works right off the bat and using a different power consumption benchmark.

If you look at other reviews like TPU's, who are normally pretty accurate in terms of power figures, their results for Furmark are ~50W lower than a typical gaming scenario.
