Between GPU pricing, SSD costs and RAM prices moving around lately, I'm curious how people are approaching upgrades.


Are you mostly buying new, shopping used, or just holding onto your current hardware longer?


Has your upgrade strategy changed compared to a few years ago?
 
Always new. I'm so tempted to get the Asus X870e Glacial and a 9950x3d2. But I need it like I need another hole in the head.

I just havent upgraded. No desire to with current prices. Still running a 5800x3d. I'd probably shop the used market if I was building for one of my kids or a friend.
 
Holding on my 5900x and 7800XT, I don't run any recent games to be honest.

I went sideways and installed CachyOS on a 2nd nvme to test the game optimised os.

Very happy with it, and it ran Doom Eternal without any problems from steam.

I looked at the same bundle of parts. I was thinking how to better my homelab and considered the idea of replacing the pair of 2697v4 inside the server chassis with my current desktop which is a 5950x. Then jumping to one of the 9950x3d/9950x3d2 bundles.

The glacial sure is pretty and would look great in a while case but the premium on that board alone even with the bundle discount is ridiculous.

However the return on cost for my primary desktop at 4k is going to be so small I can't even justify the 9950x3d2 strix bundle (the 9950x3d2 bundles being cheaper than the non 3dx2 bundles for anyone reading this and wondering why)

So for actual upgrade planning changing my desktop makes zero sense and have been seeking either 395+ deal or appropriate used hardware to upgrade the homelab. I basically need better GPU support for what I have planned.

Used epyc 7003/7003 would probably be my best option since I could reuse my ram but even an ok threadripper or a second 5950x would check a whole lot of boxes.
