Best razor?

Yeah take your time for sure because you can cut yourself pretty bad. I have the same razor with the shorter handle and I love it. My gf also loves the smoother shave it gives.

Takes a little practice but once you get the hang of it, it works very well. Also I found you could cut hair that was much longer with a safety razor than a normal cartridge razor without ripping half your face off.

I have to shave every day for work (oilfield). I have tried like 4 or 5 different electric shavers, and I mean good $150 - $350 ones, but they just don't work for me. I end up making like 5 passes to get the hair, then most of them leave my skin red and itchy. So, after trying a few different razors, I stick with Gillette fusion 4+1 blade. I keep thinking I'd like to try a nice safety razor, but just havne't bothered yet. Seeing this thread makes me want to buy one though.

Jesus, wtf do you guys need to spend hundreds of doallrs on shaving your face for.

I believe safety razor shaving is actually cheaper on a cost per year basis as the blades are pennies compared to cartridges. The razor and brush are designed to last many many years.

Also, im pretty sure you can get a very decent satefy razor set around $100 which is roughly the same as any good quality electric, it doesn't cost "hundreds" of dollars.

I've gotten a safety razor from my uncle for my bday (he's really into this), but he just got me the razor, so I had to shop for everything else. So i got a best badger brush from fendrihan, proraso cream, and the blade sample pack, along with other small things like aftershaves and what not.

Anyway, the shave is indeed better than rotary, it takes about the same time as a rotary shaver, but takes much less effort is needed with the safety razor. I really love the fact that it just slices the hair with no effort as opposed to mach3 and such where its pretty much pulls your hair.

Yea Yea, I know you can spend as much money as you want on anything really, I was just checking out links to those online stores from the older posts where there was some quite expensive shit, like there are brushes on there for $200. And importing stuff from different countries? Craziness! What exactly is a safety razor anyways? Wiki tells me it is a like a straight razor except - safer. Still looks like a normal razor though, is it just a really damn sharp blade or what?

Speaking of razors, I also found this today

I have a friend who said to me that it wasn't so much as with what instrument you chose, but how you decided to shave.

He said hot towel, short strokes on the face, going "with" the grain, and then a cold rinse was the trick to an irritation-free face. I tried it and it works for me.. and I used to get awful irritation under my chin (like... hives or something).

yeah, also check out this:

also if you take the blade off and place it upside down the water will run off the blades DOWNWARD and away from the sharp end, which stops residue from building up there. That will extend the lifetime of the blade as well. I have also heard that household bathroom/shower cleaners will "clean" your blades and take off rust, not sure how safe that is though, rubbing chemicals on your blade.

I've tried lots of electric razors and none have worked well for me so I use a Gillette mach 3 and some nivia foam (I hate the gel stuff). Like I said, I have to shave every day for work and sometimes my skin gets irritated under my chin and almost gets sort of a rash on occasion. After reading this thread, I ended up getting a merkur HD, nice brush, blades, soap, etc from Fendrihan. They shipped fast and everything was packaged well.

I was a bit afraid of cutting myself, but found it just as easy to shave with as a cartridge razor. I think it takes a bit more technique to get a close shave since there is no swivel like a cartridge razor and you have to control the angle. I didn't find it to be any closer shave than the Gillette, but maybe some more experience will improve it. That being said, the shaving soap is far better than the stuff in a can. It feels cool applying it with the brush also. My only beefs are that for some reason the Merkur HD has like a 3" handle, so I would recommend getting the long handled version. Also, when you wet the badger hair brush, it has a strong smell of... wet badger (surprise!) I've read that it wears off though, but I was actually surprised that they don't get rid of the smell when they make the brushes. The blades are ridiculously cheap compared to cartridges. I haven't done the math, but obviously the initial purchase is a few bucks, but it won't take long to pay for itself in cartridge savings.

Yeah, I got the bad smell too. I read up on it and some people recommend cleaning with vinegar or some borax. But, I didn't have either of those and didn't feel like spending time to go and buy that stuff, so I just put my brush in shampoo and got it mixed in good. Then I added hot water to a bowl and let it sit in there. Then I did the same with some conditioner. Now it doesn't really smell at all.

I don't think it provides a "closer" shave necessarily now that I think about it, I can get a close shave with cartiges too. But personally I find it way more comfortable than a cartridge razor. I am so happy to have it. Unfortunatley, I won't be shaving much now with the Canucks in the playoffs and all  gotta let the playoff beard grow long!

Best Shaves I have often fall on Victoria Day and canada day....don't ask why...

That being said, I can't get the hang of those multi blades (3 or more) that swivel and pivot, the last real shaving device I liked was those el cheapo Disposable Bics (the white and green ones with the two blades). Never cut my self with the cheap ones but have sliced myself
