The stand kept being pushed hard up against the wall so I attached a 1X3" to the bottom of the control cabinet which butts up against the edge of the desk keeping the whole rig in place and off of the wall.

Adding those MAME buttons interfered with the open space I had on the top of the controller cabinet so I modded up an old keyboard tray I had sitting on a shelf. Had to move the 3X1" forward from where I'd installed it a couple of days ago, but aside from needing to be stained at some point, the tray seems to work as advertised.

I can't imagine too many other possible additions to this, but I do kinda have my eye on an arcade "spinner" from the US. :)

Been a few years since I wiped the dust off of this, but put it back into service yesterday.... surprising how much of a muscle workout I'm getting from the body english involved in a 2 hour session. :)

I've been considering a pinball cabinet for quite some time. My dad was a carpenter, so although I'm not amazing, I think I can confidently build a full cabinet. My problem is mostly time and space atm. But every time I see a project like this, it moves the needle just a bit more towards actually going on it.

I am always a bit surprised at how immersive the experience is with the only thing really missing is a physical nudge (there is a nudge option that can be triggered by a button input). In retrospect, the one thing I'd do differently is I'd grab an actual Xbox controller (or compatible) and try to use that instead of a joystick controller. With any luck a person would be able to connect the switches to that, thus providing better compatibility. (My setup requires that I use the Steam Controller functionality which isn't the best for mapping inputs)

@sswilson guess I missed this project when first posted, but Cool!

Just about the controller idea, what about getting an actualy Xbox controller? Bolt the PCB inside the unit, remove the default button, and just use some wires to jump from the controllers solder pads to your existing buttons? Might be good for compatibility?

👍

Yeah, that's the way I'd approach this if I were to do it again. For now, the existing config works well enough that it wouldn't be worth trying to replace it.

If you ever do decide to take the plunge... this looks like a damn fine starting point which includes plans for the cabinet.
