I got a D0!

I'm pretty impressed with this chip so far. I put it head to head with my C0.
C0:
4 GHz
1.28 vcore
Idle: ~45deg
Load: ~70deg

D0:
4 Ghz
1.20 vcore
Idle: ~40deg*
Load: ~65deg*

* Use some no-name white thermal paste, while the C0 had AS5.

The D0 overclocks very well, but the heat goes up quite a bit as you increase the voltage. Like 3oh7 said, this chip truly shines with sub-ambient cooling.

I'm going to slowly make my way up from 4 Ghz, and see what my watercooling can handle.

In my last post i did a suicide run at 4.5Ghz with 1.45vcore just to see what this chip can handle. The chip seemed stable, but it idled in the high 50's, and i couldn't do a stress test because OCCT would fail because of high temps (very close to 100deg)
At 4.5Ghz, 1.35 vcore, the chip idled at high 40's, but got a BSOD when running OCCT. I guess i have to play around with some settings to hit that magic 4.5 Ghz.

The setup i'm using right now is not that great. I have the Swiftech GTZ with the MCR360 with 3 Noctua P12 fans. Not something you would consider "performance" watercooling. Maybe i'll have more luck with the PA120.2 + Skythe S-Flex.
I also have a spare EK Supreme block... i don't know if that would perform better than the GTZ...

it is a balancing act. like i said, my 920 D0 of this batch runs 4GHz 24/7 stable at 1.187v under load. my 965 C0 needs over 1.40v to run 4GHz 24/7 stable...but at that voltage, it is running the same temp as the 920 which is using waaaay less voltage, but clearly higher current.

so they are running the same frequency, same temp, but different voltage. there is more to a chips potential than just temp at a certain speed.

my 965 is only 4.1GHz 24/7 so far in two boards. this 920 runs 4.2GHz stable in everything as long as i keep load temps below 90C. if i could keep load temps around 70C, this might be a 4.4GHz ~4.5GHz 24/7 chip. perhaps a dedicated loop with a 120.2 or something could keep those temps, hard to say though.

It's always a gamble, but the D0's are looking pretty promising. I think I'm going to be going shopping for one this week myself, since I'm about 99% certain that my C0 is borked.
 
So what is the consensus worth getting (this particular batch) if you are water cooling? Or is it too early to tell?

It's probably still too early. No one really knows what batch is the best.
I'm pretty happy with the one i have so far. I currently have it at 4.4Ghz at 1.35v and the temps are just touching 80C under load.
My W/C isn't great at the moment, but i'm sure that once i get my HeatKiller, PA120.2, and proper thermal paste, those temps will drop by a lot.

I finally got my TRUE all installed. Now it's time for overclocking. However, I have no idea how to clock a Core i7.

3oh6, you free this weekend? LOL.
 
bump up Bclk.....bump up vtt....bump up vCore.......thats about it! Really thier is no "magic"...I had my CO Stepping Chip stable at 3.83 Ghz within about 10 hrs (time it took to run P95 Blended) and LinX 25 passes.

As said, unless your WC I think the whole DO Stepping has been blown wayyyy out of proportion......
 
For moderate OCs I agree (3.8-4.0) but pushing higher I haven't seen many C0s past 4.2 with reasonable volts.

Thats the point...you won't be OC'ing (on air) beyond 4.2 Ghz...and their a lot of folks OC'ing to 4.2 Ghz with CO....this whole DO thing sounds so familiar...remember the E8400 CO vs EO....it would be interesting to know how many folks wth DO stepping 920's are actually running them at 4.4 Ghz stable (on air) with Voltages below 1.35v ?

From 2.8 Ghz to 4 Ghz is hardly defined as a "moderate" OC...:doh:
