The ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB will drop $50 in price, from the $199 segment down to $149. It will compete in this price point primarily against NVIDIA's GTS 250 1GB rebrand using the old G92 chip, variants of which were used in the 8800GT, 9800GT, 9800GTX, 9800GTX+, etc. However, the HD 4870 has been shown to surpass the performance of NVIDIA's GTX 260 line, and value seekers may choose to leave NVIDIA for a better price/performance point.

Confirmed through ATI directly. Expect reductions over the next week or so at Newegg (and the .ca storefront) and shortly after at other Canadian etailers.

Well, with Quimonda going bankrupt, thier GDDR5 stock has to be selling very cheap. VERY CHEAP.

Add in PCB changes to allow for cheaper, analogue parts, rather than digital, what seems to be better yeilds on RV770, and the upcoming "RV790", the writing has been on the wall for this for some time now. Add in AMD's seeming focus on the entry-level pricing market, with AM3 720BE being able to use the disabled core, albeit with a voltage increase, and it seems that AMD is attacking the enthusiast market with all it's got...and it's looking pretty nice for us DIY'ers...

Thanks for the confirmation, SKYMTL(you posted while I was typing this post). I used the things I listed in this post to "predict" the drop, but it's always good to see companies adjusting thier strategies to match the market.:thumb:
 
Its about damn time AMD takes the fight to Nvidia. They needed to do this years ago, when NV was phantom releasing products to crap all over AMD hard releases. 4870 goodness for less than a re-re-release 8800gt? Thats a no brainer to me....now if only joe and jane sixpack would be hit w/ the clue stick it will be all good!

The funny thing is I prefer Nvidia as ATI drivers suck, BUT NV have been resting on their butts too long now and need to get back to making NEW frickin' kick arse products. YES the 8800 was good but stop kicking that dead horse! Its days are long gone (as they should be).

I think AMD knew that Phenom 1 was going to have issues, so relied on sales of the ATI cards to generate additional revenue(remember they openly stated that they were abandoning teh enthusiast market)...and now that Phenom2 is here, and seems pretty good, they can now take the company back in the direction they were headed with SKT939...good, cheap chips, awesome pricing, and good vendor support. The addition of XFX to thier distribution line spoke VOLUMES to me...

I've been saying for a few years now that the FAB business was were the money was, and they've sold it off, so I really think they are in good shape to weather the economic storm, and are ready to stick to BOTH nVidia and Intel...
