Due to the unique nature of what I do on the forums here

Totally understandable, there are those kind of people you dont want them knowing anything!
Most of us are fine but there's always those few that can spoil a good thing.

First thing that came to my head is that chick

You can call me Joe. I use my real name on only one forum i go to. Because we have to use our real names on that forum.

But whenever i deal with someones through PM, email or other forms of communication (unless im friends with you) i put my first name.

privacy being at a premium these days it's totally understandable why people do not use their real names. you can befriend as an option and then devulge whatever you feel comfortable with. i've had pm's signed with "real" names. if you've ever watched the show Catfish...you'll come to realize what is...is not.

I've been using my real name from day one of being online. Started as Steven S Wilson over on the sympatico political forums (was quite active on OpenSpace) which I'm assuming morphed into sswilson for ease of use.

Might seem strange for folks who are aware of my position on keeping control of my private information, but as I stated in a post last week... the use of my real name is on my terms and not dictated by some internet corp. :)

I usually use my real name in some form. Used to use supergrover often, as well as octavian.

@enaberif: I'll just call you by your first name for now on.

I've been online and using aliases for probably 2/3s of my life so to me it doesn't feel weird or dehumanizing at all. Over the years I've been in many different communities and been know by several different names. Even in voice chats I've gotten completely accustomed to aliases and I respond to all my aliases as if they were my real name.

Although when it comes to trading I use my real name, to many whom I've traded with on this forum my name, address and phone number are known so it's nothing to do with anonymity. It's simply the online culture we're use to.

I've been using Great_Big_Abyss ever since I was 14. I wanted a nice nickname for Microsofts 'The Zone' (anyone remember that!?!) that didn't have any numbers at the end of it. That was the first one that came to mind, for whatever reason. It's been my alias now for 16 years. Funnily enough, I've actually encountered websites where it's already being used.

Oh boy, The Zone takes me way back to my Age of Empires days. Man I was a beast at Rise of Rome expansion, playing those expert games.
