NCIX and Direct Canada removed from PC Part Picker

Years ago NCIX supported us financially and allowed us to expand. They had majority ownership but we operated as a completely independent entity. That is no longer the case and HWC is completely independent of NCIX. Whatever happens to them will not affect us in the least.....thank goodness.

However, the fall of what used to be a great retailer and etailer is hard to watch.

Indeed, NCIX was my go to etailer for a decade, although lots of people seems to have had issues with them lately, I never had any issues.

There is an official sticky post on the forum saying that they are currently restructuring.

How accurate is Memory Express' stock checker? Richmond store was too far away for me before, but they've opened a store in Langley.

The only thing MemEx is off on a lot is their 'Clearance Center' Inventory. Apparently the stores add it manually and it doesn't necessarily get update right away when something's gone. I had went to pick up a couple parts they had listed once and the guy told me they had been gone a while and it was 'live' inventory like the main site.

They can call it 'restructuring', but that's a marketer-speak way of saying desperately hanging on. I could see NCIX pull through if they maintained maybe 1-2 key brick and mortar stores (not numerous underperformers) and became mostly a shipping/sales service. A caveat to that would be that they'd have to drastically improved their processing times, inventory tracking and more than anything; fix that god-awful mess of a website. Damn thing looks like it belongs on geocities.....

Of course, I don't think it's likely. More probable they sputter on for a few more months or a year before flatlining.

So much truth here. I remember sitting down with Gav when he was talking about starting up this site.

NCIX and their sisters just seemed to not care about their client base and their website is a good testament to this.

Having worked there I met some good people including Linus and have nothing ill to say about them. But unfortunately companies like MemEx has shown how a small time Calgary store can expand properly and have a good reputation and keep people happy.

It became too complicated to deal with them. I would drive out to Markham to pick up something that I had paid for already and wait 45mins while new customers were walking up and grabbing stuff, paying and leaving. Or, walking up to one line to pick up, then another line to pay, etc. Bought a part online to ship here, pay for express shipping and then get it a week after it was promised.

I walk into Canada Computers, grab that part I need, and 95% of the time the in-store stock levels were accurate. In and out, get to browse and look at all the toys, chat with other nerds, etc. (although I have not ordered online from CC much).

NCIX has been awful to deal with the past few years. I have often just went to CC because I could just avoid frustration. Would love to see someone like memex out this way, but not if they crap the bed like NCIX and expand too quickly with no clue how to do it.

Good to hear you guys are fully independent. :thumb:

I am saddened about NCIX though, it (alongside sister DirectCanada) was my go-to for many years. Still, the market isn't as bleak as it once was many years ago, even with NCIX exiting. We still have;

Mike's Computer Shop
Memory Express
Canada Computers
Newegg.ca
Amazon.ca

and there's the various drop ship online retailers (directdial, etc).

I'm still going to keep my fingers crossed for NCIX to recover from their current problems. They were my "first love" when it came to overcoming my fear of ordering stuff online and introduced me to the joys of being able to order custom WC loop parts outside of a major urban center.

My issue(s) with a couple of the "new guys" is the practice of including third party resellers in their marketplace. It typically doesn't leave me with a warm / fuzzy feeling when I'm not ordering and/or receiving the product direct from the e-tailor.

yea, the whole "marketplace" BS (where they try and hide it and make it seem like its being sold by the vendor) pisses me off. Started with Amazon, but now newegg and even BestBuy do it! Makes it hard to buy stuff like memory cards due to many of these 3rd party's selling counterfeits. :blarg:

Just blew $250 in gift cards on a 2nd nVidia shield for the basement room. It was in stock.

Not gonna get stuck holding 250 in useless plastic if they go under.
