Rants etc.....

I think my deep freeze is failing... sigh
I had mine for 23 years. It worked great. The only thing is the lid lining was falling off.

Ended up getting a stand up freezer. While much more convenient, unfortunately it lacks the same volume.

Put the old one on the curb and it was gone in less than 30 minutes.

Checked on it this morning and some of the stuff near the top is definitely a little soft. I'll have to pick one up after work.

Does it lack the same volume because it is actually smaller or just how it packs? The current freezer is a 10cuft chest freezer and it lives in the "cold room" under the back entrance. So I can fit in a larger chest freezer but then I need to take down shelving that is holding my canning and figure out what to with that, or I think I can fit a larger 14-16cuft standup in about the same spot before the ceiling drops of. (Might as well go a size or two up considering that going forward we are likely where holiday events etc will happen now)

I don't have a standup, but my mother-in-law does and I think I would go that way if I was buying new. Hers is full size, not sure the cu ft, and there are some challenges getting bigger things like turkeys in there, but finding stuff is so much easier than digging down through the chest.

Now this woman also has two chest deep freezes so she's not lacking for conventional freezer space either! :)

Changed from a chest deep-freeze to a stand-up around 8 years ago and would never go back. You can see everything when you open the door, unlike the chest where you have to take everything off the top to find what you are looking for.

And how is it that what you are looking for is almost always NOT on the top?! ;)

It's definately smaller overall, probably similar size inside, but with all of the shelves and basket it ends up being less I think. There are shelves on the door as well but they aren't that usefull because they are quite slim and they take up inner shelf space. It's is convenient though as you dont have to hang inside to get something from the bottom plus it looks much better in the kitchen. Also the alarm is a life saver as my damn kids have left it open (not shut properly) several times.

I'm happy with the purchase.

the small loss of storage space is more than made up by the recovery of floor space you get from chest to upright.
