Rants

I hope it goes a bit smoother than my reno. I just finished except for the door trim.

It wasn't too bad, so I can't complain and with a little luck it will work out okay for ya.:thumb:

Day 2 of some "minor touchups" in the basement 3pc bathroom that was not supposed to need work. Main 3" drain stack was sheared in half where the smaller 1 1/2" drain from the kitchen sink and basement bathroom sink drain T into it. It's been leaking since we have been here for the last 2 years, now I also know where that random stinky sewer gas smell is coming from. By the time I am done "touching up' this bathroom I will have gutted it and rebuilt it.

Remember, the main floor bathroom/entire house water piping replacement job is coming up in 2 weeks so this is just the warmup, lol. I need this one fixed now, and for no money. Sigh.....

while in the walls run some cat6 cable

It'll work out, just had to quadruple the budget. This was supposed to be a lipstick reno on the basement bathroom. The main floor bathroom has been budgeted as a full gut so there is no real chance of surprises there. I was just not emotionally or physically ready for what I am finding inside the walls. Thankfully, life goes on.

LOL!! These are basement walls I am in now, nowhere near rooms that need cat6. I have run wires through most of the house already, the only things that use wireless in my house are our phones.

I bought the paint sprayer for that, painted some cardboard getting used to it. Still not keen on painting and with a back entrance and stairwell that has California drop on the walls so oil based only. I had to dilute it just to keep it from

spotting. So that should be fun...:blarg::biggrin:

I redid my water main a few yrs back. I'm not certain what u have or what is being put in but I went from a 1/2" main with 1/2" lines to a 1" main with a 3/4" hot water main. The pressure difference in my case was outstanding !

We redid a friend's main inside to 1" with a 3/4" main, a manifold so to speak and his water flow is much better.

What's a home reno without a few surprises right ??? :haha::clap:

Good luck with yours.

My next project for the indoors is to redo my man cave, bcuz my little wood shop needs to expand.

I'm not digging up the water main, it's already 3/4" into the house (most are like that) but we will stick to standard 1/2" in th3 house as all the runs are close and there really is not much in the way of piping considering I have 3 bathrooms, 2 laundry rooms and 2 kitchens in my house. It is all concentrated in one end of the house over 3 floors. Much of the piping we have now is cast iron, I'll just be happy when that is all gone. To do any work on the water pipe coming into my house would mean to hand dig everything to get access since the stupid natural gas line/meter is above the water lines.

Always expected to find surprises, just amazes me as to how poorly the last reno was done. Even their cover ups were obvious.

Dual Rant

1)Bought my son a small 24" TV for his room to watch cartoons while he plays and a Roku thing as we needed something wireless since we have no Ethernet in his room(that's another rant lol)
Get it home and set it up on the counter to watch while he's eating supper everythings working fine... Take it upstairs and put it in his room and now all of a sudden it wont pick up my router that's in the basement 30ft away but yet it will pick up my neighbours WIFI signal that's on the opposite side of my house - past the driveway, lawn and then in HIS basement on the other side of his house like 130ft away...

So I left that for another day and decided to work on my computer room.

2)Took everything out of the computer room(keep in mind I have nowhere else to use my computer) pack everything up.. do all my measurements and cut all the wood to do a simple clean flat Desktop from wall to wall. I measure for studs and mount the back piece and thats fine.. I measure the right side, for a 16" stud and I use a very small bit just to make sure as I don't trust anchors with electronics and find it, great.
Now off to the left wall...measure 16" and pre-drill - Nothing... move right 1 inch and redrill - Nothing again.. move left an inch from the first hole nothing again!! so after driling about 7 small hole I notice a indent in the drywall from a screw head that sunk in further and think...that doesn't look right and sure enough.... 20"!!!! So after having my desktop cut to a 16" depth I cant use it and have to redo everything.

On a inside nonbearing wall that can be normal depending on how the layout guy laidout the walls. normally you start latout from the outside wall to the inside, sounds like he laid one wall from the outside and the other wall from the inside. Since it isnt a bearing wall I assume the contractor just left out that stud since it would have been a custom sized piece of drywall.. Not a great practice but TBH commonly done.

Sorry, I didn't mean u should dig up ur main. With all of those pipes at 1 end of the house it would be pretty easy to make the main as a manifold, and the fact is if you go from a 1/2" main to a 1" main ur talking 4 times the volume.

I used to take all day to do laundry, now I can get it done in about half of that time or less while doing more loads.

Tub used to take 20 mins to fill, now 5 mins.

We really don't use more water than b4, but taking a shower is so much better. We also have water saving faucets everywhere except the laundry room.

I did my manifold while the girls weren't home a small section at a time. Added unions to make things easier to work on.

It sounds like you have things well planned out which is a challenge for some people to grasp for some reason.

Good luck and hopefully it won't present too many new issues. We had an alloy pipe for a main which had lead in it, so we did the main for that reason, as well as upgrading to 1".

Couldn't find a 3/4" frost free valve for outside and if I wanted a larger meter it would've cost me a monthly fee so the meter is 5/8"...

Companies that cheap out and don't use UPS's...

I have gotten to the point where I can predict a weather pattern better than a meteorologist due to networks screwing up from lack of a battery backup. Funny these people bitch about losing money if a printer doesnt spit out an invoice in 20 seconds, but no qualms being down half the day while we hunt down the broken switch/router ect.
