Rants etc.....

Turns out a WD 2.5 1TB black is 2 mm thicker than the average SSD and Seagate 2.5" and won't fit into a mount on the qbx project I'm working on. Not a big pain, but a minor unexpected annoyance
 
Canadian laptop prices - why are they so much higher than in the US - even with exchange they are about 25% higher than in the states. Just as a random example: see the razer below - the Canadian version is even previous generation CPU and it's still more than $400 higher even after exchange - it's common that you can't even get the latest models here and they still want your left arm......I'll just never buy another laptop if that's the way it's going to be.

The infamous Screw Canada fee.

Just buy it from the states. Lots of people are doing this now, and US e-tailers are making it easy (B&H Photo comes to mind). Even if they arnt as friendly as B&H as long as you inform the seller to tell their shipper you're going to self-clear customs it wont cost you an arm and a leg. Taxes are taxes, its the brokerage fee that screws you normally.

I recently bought something for $200 USD, self cleared after FedEX tried to screw me (Luckily I always ask for the reference number or support number) and it was $10 in taxes. FedEX wanted $60 in brokerage fees, plus the taxes.
 
Why wouldn't you just order from Amazon.com? It says it ships to Canada, $15 shipping, $201 in taxes (to Toronto). Comes to about $2170 after conversion. Still $400 cheaper in the end.

Couple years back I ordered my Denon AVR from Amazon.com because of a similar price difference. Thankfully Amazon is like B&H where the taxes are paid up front so there's no stupid brokerage fees.

And an added bonus, US laptops will be English-only keyboards. Not the stupid Canadian Multilingual design we get up here...

I just grabbed that particular set of links as an example (not the best one obviously) - but surprised to see it ships to Canada - I always thought that it was a very rare occurrence to find something that amazon.com would ship across the border - I'll be more diligent in looking for that going forward.

Between .ca and .com you pretty much have to shop around. Amazon Canada does a lot of free shipping over $35 and Amazon US as stated ships a lot of stuff to Canada and can be far cheaper but you need to do a lot of comparision shopping.

For example 90% of my vehicle parts come from Rock Auto because even with shipping I can usually save hundreds and my last part bought would have been $45 + shipping through RA but on Amazon Canada it was $45 with free shipping.

We live in a time that ordering through the US can make a lot of sense and sometimes even using a 3rd party like Dyk post can save more.
