The Happy thread!

Had bought a Denon X1200H + a Soundstage 8" subwoofer off FB a couple months ago for $50. AVR had a broken antenna, broken foot, and missing remote. Feet took a minute to model so had new feet printed for maybe a $1. Remote was under $10 on Ali.

Antenna tho was a tad harder. Why are there so many damn types of tiny antenna connectors? First set I bought did not fit. But 2nd did. Both wifi and bluetooth work!

Will need to 3d print a tiny adapter to mount the new antennas. But once again shouldn't take more than a couple minutes of my time.

Just did the rear brakes on my wife's Q5. She said there was a grinding sound for a day after we came back from vacation in mid-November. It appears that the electronic parking brake didn't retract properly as one brake pad was ground down, the others still had tons of life left. I replaced them all with new pads anyway. My 16 year old son who's had 2 years of Auto Tech class in high school helped me, it didn't take nearly as long as I expected. He actually avoids doing stuff like that with me but I made him come out and help. About 45 minutes for the first side, including finding all the needed tools, and 20 minutes for the 2nd side once I knew the process 😛 .

I have mild red-green colour blindness, some shades of green look brown to me. Terminating an RJ45 cable is hard for me in great light. If I hold brown and green together I can tell the difference. But the lighting in my 'office' is terrible. Tried to terminate one today and couldn't do it. So needed to improve lighting.

Still had a pair of the high powered Samsung 24" 24V LED strips not being used. Using the same 2" square aluminum tube I used for my shop lights and a pair of 3d printed parts to mount. Added the lights above my desk. Running an WWRGB ESP8266-based controller, flashed to ESPHome. @ 1% brightness w/ 1 strip it is perfect for night time browsing in the dark. But 2 strips was too bright. So currently have disconnected one. I'll have to run another wire to the RGB controller to have it controlled independently. I'm also likely going to add a couple of red RGB strips that I can just turn on for some mood lighting.

But controlling the lights an issue. I don't want to have to open up my phone to turn on the lights. Was pretty quickly able to set it up so that I've got keyboard shortcuts working. fn + [ to toggle light on/off. fn + ] to set to 1% brightness. And fn + \ key to increase brightness by 5%. And it is instant.

I think I should also be able to configure it so the light turns on automatically when I wake the PC. And then turn off 30s after going to sleep.

But such a massive improvement already.

EDIT: Just found out after 3 years that my [ ] keys are incorrectly installed on my keyboard. And I use to use them all the time for other hotkeys when I ran multi monitors. Hmm.

EDIT2: Got lights to turn on/off with PC. Turning off is instant, I'll need to add a 30s delay. Turning on takes 10-15s. Nothing I can do about that unfortunately.

Back from Japan. Trip was really good for the most part, though the friend I travelled with snored horribly and I'm a light sleeper.

I don't normally do social media, but did post photos on instagram and briefly have a public account there before I wipe it in a few weeks. Had too many friends ask for pics and I was too lazy to send them to each person individually.
It's https://www.instagram.com/adamvsmaximvs/
if any of you want to snoop. Don't bother following though as I'll remove all the followers when I wipe it :)
