the 'Stuff That's Just Really Interesting 'thread

wife sent this to me earlier today. it's an article discussing the level of intelligence corvids likely have. a lack of data makes most of it empirical / philosophical, but it's all on the mark.

The data transfered daily is immense!

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory transfers approximately 20 terabytes of data from Chile to the U.S. every night.

Data Journey

  • Speed: Data travels from the summit in Chile to the U.S. Data Facility at SLAC in California in about 7 seconds.
  • Frequency: The 3,200-megapixel camera captures a new 8-gigabyte image every 40 seconds.
  • Infrastructure: Transfers utilize a high-speed fiber-optic network with a bandwidth of 100 gigabits per second.

Long-term Storage

By the end of its 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), the observatory will have produced a raw data set of roughly 60 petabytes. Including processed data and catalogs, the total volume is expected to reach up to 500 petabytes.

20TB a day...that's over 7 Petabyte's a year!

I asked Copilot what the estimate was for how much data is generated daily;' it reported 2.5 million TB...which is 2500 PB which is 2.4 Exabytes; a day! 2.5EB would require almost 84,000x 30TB HDD to store it; A DAY!!!

that's a lot of HDD, so I pinged Copilot as to what the estimate is for the # of 30TB HDD Seagate & WD likely manufacture every day. it reported there are no reports that provide any figures on that, but using all the other datapoints available, said that across all HDD storage manufacturers, 35 - 40 million HDD are shipped every quarter. Seagate & WD would account for 80 - 85% of that.

Since most of OpenAI's users don't pay for it, not sure how much of an impact of users uninstalling would be on their bottom line. Now that Sam took a deal with Pentagon after Anthropic said no.

Nokian made a new snow tire with self retracting studs base on surface temps.

Ok, if that works like they say it does, then damn that will be the tire to have. Of course I'm sure they will be like $500+ a tire or something, but still, very cool.

Nokian is also a Kal Tire exclusive in Canada. And at least here Kal Tire has no idea what they are doing.

The whole couple weeks I drove with the studded tires before the Outlander was totaled honestly the studs were not that that much louder than a regular tire.
