this is the unofficial odd thoughts, observations and random question thread

Alternatives for rack mount KVMs? The rackmount KVM i sourced is actually too long for the rack that I have. There is not enough room for the VGA connection and closing the rear door at the same time kind of defeating the purpose so it has just been sitting there didn't even bother to buy the cables that it didn't come with. .

Found stuff like this https://www.primecables.ca/p-393288...ack-mount-monitor-mount-4u-vesa-75x75-100x100 to act as a monitor mount which would work, mainly curious if anyone has seen more creative solutions. The fold up monitor, keyboard, mouse being all in one was a nice touch but keyboard, mouse, monitor and a 4 port KVM switch is an acceptable solution at this point.

If labeled as a gift and valued at say $25 (which is undervalued, of course) I don't think there'd be any issues.
Just ran into some more definitive information on this - duty will be applied AFTER August 29th.
Unless it's something made of gold for Donald. Or a 747.

So on August 29 for imports from all countries globally, with parcels will have tariffs or flat fees.

President Donald Trump signed an an executive order to remove the "de minimis" duty-free treatment on parcels under $800 from all countries, starting Aug. 29, bringing forward a change previously set for July 2027.

Got the same problem for my network rack... whenever I get around to that project haha. Regardless, ive already got a solution:

I got a VESA monitor stand meant for touchscreen monitors that can fold flat. Going to bolt it to a universal sliding rack tray. Underneath that I put another slide out tray meant for a KB. Together it should be 4U (or maybe 3U if im lucky) tall and only about 18in deep. Slide out the monitor tray, flip up the monitor, slide that tray back a bit, then slide out the KB tray, KVM included.

Should work out well enough, but its all just loose parts at the moment so I can't really say how it works for sure haha

I thought that had already went in... guess American's are in for some more sticker shock in 8 days then!

Is it possible to replace a kitchen cabinet wall without removing the counter top? My dishwasher leaked water for a long time before I found out and the cabinet wall on both side got mould inside that I can't really get rid of. The counter top is extremely long and would require removing the sink to take off.

Any recommendations on a "wood filler" product that can be used to fill door hinge screw holes so that I can drill a pilot hole and have it take the screws securely?

Sounds like the most recommended solution is to drill out a hole big enough to accept wooden dowels and then glue those into place.... that sounds like a lot more work than finding something like an epoxy filler that would work..........

Wood glue and sawdust if your looking for the "simple" approach. Make a mix and force the mixture in. Basically same idea as the dowel.

Hardware store countertops max out around 12ft or so before there is a seam of some kind. Only custom stuff I think is any longer than that. But usually the counter is anchored to the cabinets from below. However most countertops have a sizable lip wrapping over the front and that means you need to lift the counter top at least that high to get the cabinet out (1/2in or so?). Otherwise you need to cut things out and even if you cut it out you then need to still lift the counter to get the replacements back in place.

If it is the kind without the lip then shimming it even like 1/16th of an inch on the nearby cabients after loosening the achors could be enough to get it out.

I mentioned the flooring above as a potential issue as well since depending on how the kitchen was done the flooring may be under the cabinet in which case there isn't a lip to deal with under it. If like my kitchen the flooring was butted up to them but they are directly on the subfloor or whatever then you also need to overcome the height of the tiles or whatnot.

Found a video that kind of shows some of it. Suggest jumping around.

Dowel is 100% the way to go. No filler is going to be all that secure short of a high solid epoxy maybe.

At most hardware stores they sell the fluted dowels for furniture. Get a couple of those, predrill just being enough that a mallet can force the dowel in. Put some carpenters glue on, use the mallet to force the dowel in. Cut flush and wipe off the excess glue.
