My journey to The Fives by Klipsch

xentr_thread_starter
Briefly to the above comments when considering the fives I was doing so with great trepidation with the reputation that horns let alone Klipsch's have a bright or harsh sound signature and perhaps for the longest time that was indeed the case. I believe Klipsch in the last several years have made a move to dispel or remedy that situation. I see evidence of that in the fives as their high-end is not in the slightest bit harsh, overly bright or fatiguing! Behind the horn is a titanium dome tweeter, the horn serves to disperse the sound. I will comment more on the sound of these speakers in a later post. Also everybody hears things different and to each their own:-)

I went through that long process of upgrading my 80s stereo equipment early this year. Fortunately my hearing is still very good. First was having to adjust to all the high tech changes since the 80s. Luckily there's a lot of YouTube & online review articles which helped immensely - frequently multiples of the same units. Then sifting through what was actually available in Canada due to all the shortages. And having to increase the budget due to availability.
New receiver was simple and easy and painless. A Cambridge AXR100 from an Ontario distributor. Even on my 40 year old ESS Evaluator speakers, soundstage and quality was a big improvement.

Speakers turned out to be a nightmare. Settled on a pair of tower speakers via Amazon only to receive 2 different speakers. I kept the one I ordered, refused the other. Ordered a replacement and got yet a 3rd speaker. Then sent them both back and wrestled for a refund. Couldn't find anything close at that price so up went the budget. But out of stock. Up went budget - several still out of stock. Budget blown - ordered a pair SVS Prime Pinnacle out of Toronto. Only 1 showed up - refused until both could be delivered. When the pair showed up, 1 carton was badly punctured - refused both. Replacement order came fairly fast with no hassle. Received them undamaged with sequential serial numbers. In the meanwhile I had ordered a CD transport.

Spent a lot of time setting up/placing the speakers and testing. But excellent results. Listening to all my CDs (& CDs I had created from vinyl) was an amazing experience - it was like listening to them for the first time. So in the end, it worked out fine thankfully. But what a harrowing experience.

It's a cruel fate not being able to listen to my fives and to enjoy them. My last listen was yesterday morning and it'll be several days until I can get to them again.......COVID-19 has me self isolating away from my study😔
There's a strong possibility it's spread to me from my son who got positive last week after going to the Red Hot Chili Pepper concert....FUCK!
He's been self isolating since.
Geez and we're the safe ones still wearing their masks!

Woe is me

My brother bought a pair of Cornwall IV on his 50th and no matter how hard I tried I just could not get on with the sound. Klipsch is too harsh of a sound for me.
I feel the exact same way. Klipsch just sounded a little to harsh to me too... spent hours in a stereo store listening to everything.

This may or may not be applicable but room Acoustics plays a large part in how a speaker sounds? In my audio/video room I built my own wall mounted acoustic panels and I tell you it's worth it!

@moocow @Sagath it's easy to check if you've got an ear with some IEM's. get a pair of $25 IEM's and then a pair of $75 IEM's, but not from the well known names but rather from the niche players who make for the audiophile community.

@sswilson horns are tweeters, but tucked back into the horn.

I know someone who's lucky enough to have a very well paying job who just spent around $200K USD for some used gear that would MSRP for closer to $750K. I cannot even fathom that...
