Ontario Liberal Majority

Yup Sagath I was too quick to say the turnout was record-low; I based my statement off of the news report concerning advance polls.

Left-wing, right-wing, I honestly believe that the Liberals did not deserve to be the next govt, let alone majority. While I liked the new pension idea in principle (as a left-winger), here were my issues:

1. Liberals: too careless with our money. I don't care about paying taxes for services and supporting folks who need it, but the spending scandals have shown that the Libs cannot be trusted to learn from mistakes. Also, their election platform has too many holes in how they plan to save money to eliminate the deficit (let alone pay off debt). I think the Libs will do through the back door what Hudak planned to do through the front door. As a teacher, I can give some specific examples of this, but not here right now.

2. Cons: Unrealistic numbers in their plan. Job creation numbers were plain stupid (holding one job for 3 years does not mean 3 jobs). Job creation numbers based on corp tax reductions are faulty. Flaherty himself was frustrated with the about of capital corps are holding on to with our tax breaks...they are NOT spending the tax savings on jobs. They are paying out profits to shareholders (not living here) and bonuses to CEOs.

3. NDP: details missing in their plan. Dropped idea of a pension plan just because the Libs decided to steal the idea. It really is disappointing that Horwath triggered this election...she got a progressive budget, and could have maintained influence and helped nip at Liberals heels in a minority govt. Cut off her nose to spite her face.

4. Loved the Green's stance on Catholic school system. It needs to be abolished so that we can improve efficiency in the system. However, details missing on savings, etc.

It is a sad day when a govt that has been as cavalier as the Libs with our money and our rights can be rewarded. The lesson learned by all the parties is to avoid any realistic plan, and put a smiley face on to cover up your crimes.

Lets pray that Wynne wil do better. Somehow, I severely doubt it. As someone who has voted prov Liberal several times, they certainly did not deserve this win at all.

I'm not sure that's the take-away.

I'm more inclined to suggest that any proposed plan has to be balanced between austerity/cuts as well as increased revenue through closing loopholes and improvements to the way we tax income.

A good start would be a minimum tax based on all income sources.... did you have $100,000 to spend last year.....? Then the bare minimum you would owe the government would be 20% (could be any number... I just pulled that out of my rear end as an example).

I'd also have a strong look at how we tax capital gains from sort term holds.... I can understand the benefit of the stock market for raising capital, but day trading is not investing, it's a form of gambling and there is no reason why we should be subsidizing that behavior through special tax treatment. I'd suggest that capital gains from any assets held for less than 6 months (again a number I pulled out of my rear end for examples sake) be taxed as standard earned income.

Lastly, even though the revenue gained would probably not be that large, the public needs to see that government is doing it's part so I'd also remove tax benefit status from all current politically related tax breaks. I see no reason why the general public is being asked to subsidize funds donated to political parties and/or fees for lobbying.

Those are just a few ideas to start, I'm sure the great majority of current tax breaks don't really serve the social good and as such should probably be eliminated as well. Things like startup capital would still be covered by the capital gains rate for stocks held longer than 6 months so we really don't need to double up by offering special status to those kinds of investments.

The "Million Job" plan was exactly that, a plan, an idea! Screw the math, its the IDEA that mattered; Hard action for Hard times.

Blowing $1 000 000 000 (COUNT THE ZEROS HERE, its not 90 000 like the Duffy scandal!) and having the RCMP investigate you for fraud is NOT what a government should be comprised of. These assholes should be in jail, not running the f***ing province, and liberal voters said 'YES COME BACK!"

Thank god I'm moving out of this place. Within 4 years I feel this place is going to go supernova with expats and businesses leaving. I cant wait for Wynne to reneg on all her platform as the province descends into anarchy.

What's wrong with a Catholic School system? I was educated for all of my elementary, junior high and high school years in a catholic system.

Nothing wrong with it, it should not be publicly funded. Where I am from, if you want to use another school besides your local you pay for it and you can get a rebate from the local overnment since your not using the public system. This rebate is not big, and it will not cover private schooling.

We should not be funding faith based schooling with taxes.

We should be funding faith based schools. They are the only ones that have proven to 'work' (ie long before non-secular schools were invented there was secular...and they have a LONG, successful track record...that the non-sec simply dont have). I went through schools with the Brothers and Nuns....and you did NOT talk back. You were taught to be polite, taught to be respectful, and taught to respect your teachers AND were actually taught. Can the same be said of public schools that are failing the next gen? FFS most kids these days cant even make change without a cash register. If johhny cant count, johhny cant be counted on.

IMHO get the bureaucrats out of the school system. Make it all a classic faith based system. Sure do provincial testing to ensure that everything is being taught to standard, but let the nuns and brothers do what they PROVEN to be the best at doing: teaching the next gen.

This is coming from someone who is not Catholic but went through Catholic schools (so no the brainwashing claims of the left are BS...like most leftest ideas). Let the nanny state lovers have to pay private schools to indoctrinate their kids to love Big Gov.

Sounds general and anecdotal. I along with all my friends were taught pretty well in public school.

Couldn't agree more. Though, I fear provinces like Alberta will be forced to prop up provinces like Ontario when they get too deep in thier own $4!%.
